    About six months before one particular day, the day when everything became, shall we say, unusual, I spent a little more money than usual on light bulbs. They were the newest design, more energy-efficient, more lumens and such but, the best part, they were guaranteed to last a lifetime. I liked the idea. Buy them, install them and then, you never have to worry about buying light bulbs again. Not that I spend that much time worrying about light bulbs. I don’t. Not like my mother.

    I remember growing up, she had a shelf in a hall closet off the kitchen occupied only by light bulbs. All variety of the damn things. Different wattage, different colors. Literally, and I hate to use that term because most people use it when they truly mean figuratively, but in this case, I mean literally. I know it to be true because one rainy, summer afternoon, when I was still very young, I undertook, at my own choosing, to count the number of light bulbs on that shelf in that closet. I set about taking all the bulbs off the shelf and stacking them on the table. The oversized oak dining table that my mother loved, and polished, and decorated. Constantly.
