So You Want to Be a Christian - Pastor Kent T. Johnson Sr.

    Chapter 1

    I Am A CHRISTIAN

Today the life of a Christian or someone who is supposed to be Christ-like is anything but that. From the looks of things and the sound of things, it’s hard to tell the difference between a believer and a non-believer. How could this be when God has called us to be separate from the world?

    John 15: 19

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. Remember the word that I said unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

Has the problem of the church begin to resemble the problem Moses had with the children of Israel when God released them out of Egypt? Brought them out of the world, but they couldn’t release what they loved about the world, forcing God to prolong their time in the wilderness, waiting for older generation to die off before they ever seen the promise land.

When you make up your mind that you are to give your life to God, you give up your old life and all that goes with it that would come between you and God.

    Romans 6:16

Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servant to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

God supplied everything that they needed on a daily basses, yet they murmured and complained about what god was preparing for them, yet wanting to go back to what they had when they were back in Egypt. Of course this angered God and caused God to judge them.

    Luke 9:62

And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Here we see Jesus wasn’t playing when it came to the ministry, either you going to follow Him or you will be left, what we lack is the seriousness of the situation even today.

    Romans 6:1-2

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer there in?

Many preachers today would preach a Grace message that would leave you to believe that it is ok to sin because grace will cover you, and your ok with God, and the end result is a church full of people who look, talk and act like the world, you grow a church of believers who are still slaves to sin because they never felt the need to die to the flesh and its lustful desires. God Forbid! Jesus death, burial and resurrection was to break the chains that has us locked down to serving the desires of our flesh, He came to free us from sin and death. So through Christ we can live a sin free life and be the peculiar people God has called us to be.

    Titus 2:14

Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

    1Peter 2:9

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

    Exodus 19:5

Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people; for all the earth is mine.

God makes it very plain what he wants out of his people, yet we continue to try to justify our sin instead of take the mindset that we are not going yield our bodies to works of death anymore, and present ourselves unto God as a living sacrifice, holy!

    Leviticus 20:7

Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the Lord your God.

    1 Peter 1:13-16

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, and hope to the end of grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lust in your ignorance: 15 but as he which hath called you holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 because it is written, BE YE HOLY; FOR I AM HOLY.

From these few scriptures we learn that a life change is required to be a follower of Christ. The purpose of this book is to remind you of life that you have become apart of and what is expected of us, who claim to
