Rose, the Acadie Fairy Princess - Janice J Roane

Rose touched the face of the Tree Man. She felt the gnarls and wrinkles as her smooth hand brushed over the rough face. Impulsively, she swiped at the tears slipping down from his left eye. A moment later, she was shaking twigs and leaves off her blue shirt and staring at a rivulet of red blood coursing along her leg, where a cut was visible. She spotted the villain. It was a sharp-edged branch that had broken when she landed here. Wait! Landed? Rose stared back at the tree on the hill, a football length away, and gasped as she put her hand to her mouth. How had she gotten here, she wondered. She heard the bell ringing from the kitchen door and knew it was time for lunch.

Mom was ready, and Rose had no idea how she was going to explain her appearance. She limped over to the hose and hurriedly washed the blood off her leg. She grabbed her beach towel that she was going to use after a quick race through sprinklers and began rubbing the leaves and branches from her clothes and hair. As she picked the shredded dry leaves and small pieces of branches from her honey brown curls, Gabriel danced up and down around her, begging for attention.

No, Gabriel. We have to go in now for lunch. Did you see what happened, Podner? Rose asked as she patted the thick, fluffy fur above his eyes. Gabriel cocked his head to the side and barked sharply in an answer.

Come on then, let’s go see if mom notices my injuries, Rose whispered as they headed for the door. She felt a breeze propel her towards the door and heard the rustle of the leaves on Mr. Tree Man. I have got to figure this out, she thought.

Rose slid inside, as stealthily as a ninja. Mom was busy heating up Marion’s pureed food. The pureed carrots and peas were not appealing to Rose. Her stomach rumbled loudly, announcing hunger and a need for food.

Hey, sunshine. Did you enjoy your run through the sprinklers? Mom inquired, turning from the sink to face Rose. She quickly slid onto the barstool trying to make her 5 foot 6-inch frame smaller. She winced as her leg scraped against the wood frame of the island.

Oh yeah, mom. It was great! Rose answered quickly.

Rose, how did you manage not getting your hair wet? Mom asked looking puzzled.

Oh, well! I was starting to run for the first sprinkler and kinda crashed my leg into a tree, she answered hating lying to her mother.

Let me look at it. Oh my, that is a big gash! We need to clean it out and bandage it. Come with me, Mom said carrying Marion with her into the back bathroom.

Rose followed feeling a sharp pain along her shoulder blades. Wow that landing was a really bad one, she thought, trying desperately to hold in the gasp caused by the pain.

After mom cleaned up the dried crusty blood and bandaged her wound, Rose worked her way back to the kitchen. Her shoulder area was painful, and it was itching like crazy. While she ate her ramen noodles and cheese sauce, her thoughts drifted to today’s events. What had propelled her from the hill to the bushes on the side of the house? All she remembered was wiping the Tree Man’s tears and then the pain of crashing. She pinched herself to see if she was dreaming. Ouch! No, she was awake. Her head hurt, and she just wanted to lay on the hill in the shade of Mr. Tree Man’s branches. She made her way to the hill and found a cool spot. The soft rustling of the leaves from the breeze moving through the branches soothed her. She heard the whisper of the leaves as they chanted, Sweet nature! Gentle winds! Embrace this child of ours! She had no fear. She had grown up in this paradise yard. She savored the honeysuckle in spring, the wild cherries and blackberries in summer. She felt movement in her shoulders and reached back to touch the spot. She drew back her hand suddenly. The skin was so tender and ticklish. She stood up and felt light headed but could not sit back down. Amazed, Rose watched as she hovered above the ground. She grabbed the Tree Man near his tears and wham; she was back in the bushes again.

It was time to start putting this puzzle together. Gabriel was looking confused. He kept whining low and pleading with her to come to the yard. Wait! Gabriel couldn’t talk! thought Rose. But yet Rose heard him clearly speak in her head.

Come back! Over here Rose! Quick before anyone sees you, Gabriel clearly spoke with an English tone.

Wow, thought Rose, What’s going on, with me?

    I don’t know, said Gabriel.

Later that night, Rose painfully struggled to pull her favorite zebra pajamas on while the events of the day kept running through her mind like a herd of zebras.

    Ouch, oh, she
