Destined by a Mile - Daisy S. Connor-Robinson
INTRODUCTION
I first experienced emotional pain and disappointment in January 1965 when I sat under a baby’s crib with a dog, excited that I had a newborn baby sister.
Clearly my memory of that moment never faded away. My mother grabbed me from under the crib where I sat with a dog minding my newborn sister and
said, If you ever hurt and do any evil thing to my baby girl—I will kill you or have you killed!
Astounded at what my mother blurted out I could only see the piercing hatred in her eyes as she looked into mine. I was never able to explain why and my
mother gave me no explanation as to her reason or reasons for grabbing me and saying what she did. Immediately I felt unloved, deprived, and unwanted,
and began to ask myself, Why does my mother hate me so much—that she has gone as far as to threaten to kill?
I began wondering what would happen to
me if one day I accidentally stepped on my newborn sister’s feet, or even bumped into her while we played. "Would I ever be able to play games with my
newborn sister, I would ask myself. It was a major concern to me. You can imagine—a mother telling a four-year-old young girl;
I’ll kill you or have you
killed!"
Nevertheless, time went on. It was very unusual that I hardly ever saw my newborn born younger sister. Later on, approximately nine months after my
younger sister was born, I found out she was with a tumor and had to be rushed to the hospital for an emergency surgery. Now that I think about what
happened (as an adult), I think; maybe my mother said that evil, cruel thing to me (about killing or having me killed if I ever hurt my sister) because my mother was worried and afraid that my sister would die (because my sister was born with a tumor).
People respond or react differently to their fears and worries.
ME, MY AUNT, AND AN UNCALLED-FOR BIRTHDAY PARTY ARRANGEMENT
My aunt used to be my baby-sitter when I was pre-school age. She was 15-years-old. One day my aunt began slapping me softly across my face and taking my
arms, twisting me in a roundabout way; as she told me, "I think your eldest sister is prettier than you, and I can prove it. Your sister was invited to a
birthday party, but you were not…you are going anyway, because you like to invite yourself even though
you’re not welcomed." I shook
