I should have known better than to look for a hitman in a pub.  How often has the news reported murder plots laid to waste when ‘hitmen’ found in pubs turned out to be undercover police officers?

I chose a derelict old boozer near the docks called The Seven Seas, reasoning it would be full of wharfies and shady types.  I guess the cops thought the same way.

Afterwards I recalled that his glass was full and he didn’t touch it while we spoke.  His eyes were too bright, too alert, but something familiar in his expression encouraged me to spill my guts.  Commissioning a hit suddenly seemed like the easiest thing in the world, like ordering bacon from the deli.

Sometimes I dream about that day and in my dreams, he gives me a pass but that’s not how it worked
