The Devil's Food - Susan Bennett
Even in the worst weather, we never minded the walk. If a squall blew into the forest, breathing salty mist from those lonely islands beyond the mountain, or the whispered scent of heather blooming on the moors, then we lingered beneath the shelter of the trees a while longer until the storm passed and we could go to her.
We only played one game to pass the time, though we never tired of it: our version of I Spy, where Granda quizzed me on the names of mushrooms he’d taught me.
The first one, wearing an angelic halo belying its poisonous nature, was easy. Destroying Angel!
I said.
Aye,
said Granda, holding it up for me to inhale its sweet, sickly smell.
Sinister and slimy, the next one was easy too. Death Cap.
Well spotted, Jamie.
He pointed to a cluster of warty red mushrooms at the base of an imposing beech.
