Visit annualcreditreport.com to pull a free copy of your credit report from the three reporting agencies: Experian, Transunion, or Equifax. You can receive a free copy of your credit report every 12 months from the date it was accessed. Paid credit monitoring service is needed to track progress and updates: identityiq.com, Experian.com, or credit.com. Do NOT use Credit Karma. The information is not as accurate as the other sites, and they do not report to Experian.

Take some time to analyze the report. To beginners, this may feel like reading a foreign language, but rest assured, it will become easier. Notice any old addresses or phone numbers no longer associated with you. Call to have those addresses and/or phone numbers removed from your profile. You also want to take note of all open accounts, inquiries, or derogatory marks. You will need to provide proof of your identity. You may fax them directly. Doing this after hours always seems to work best.

Now it’s time to suppress your information from the third party data holding agencies. These companies correspond with credit reporting agencies (CRAs) to help verify your information. Visit these websites to freeze them from sharing your information. This forces the CRAs to do all the work; they must verify with 100% accuracy the information that is reported.
