About this ebook

Summary of On Tyranny - A Comprehensive Summary

Chapter 1: Do Not Obey in Advance

Anticipatory obedience is the tendency of a newly defeated population to anticipate what the new leaders want and then to adapt their behavior to this perceived requirement, often even pre-empting the plans of the new regime. After the Nazis won power in 1932, and when the communist government won the Czechoslovakian elections in 1946, the new governments may have been surprised at how quickly and easily the citizens were willing to extend their services to the new regimes. By taking quick action to harness the communities’ willingness to conform, the leaders were able to cement the change.
“Most of the power of authoritarianism is freely given. In times like these individuals think ahead about what a more repressive government will want, and then offer themselves without being asked. A citizen who acts in this way is teaching power what it can do.”

    Introduction

History does not repeat but it does instruct. Thus begins On Tyranny: a discussion on current American politics, contrasted against the history of twentieth century Europe. The book instructs the reader on actions that must be taken to prevent the democratic United States from collapsing into an authoritarian state.

Each chapter is a call to action. The book offers dozens of examples of how communist and fascist leaders convinced citizens to give up their freedom, to commit crimes against humanity, and to believe the altered reality offered to them. Each example is paired with examples of similar actions taking
