I t’s only for the summer, sweetie, Izzy’s mom promised, kissing her forehead. I have to go abroad for work, and I don’t want to leave you alone at home.

Izzy and her mom were waiting at the curb of the airport. The sound of a plane speeding down the runway filled Izzy’s ears.

But Mom, I can take care of myself! I’m old enough, and I had plans, Izzy protested loudly over the plane’s roar.

Izzy. Eleven years old is not old enough. Besides, you’ll have plenty of fun exploring down here in Bluelake City. I’m sure it’ll beat staring at a screen for hours on end anyway.

But why do I have to stay with him? Izzy whined.

Her mom sighed as she moved Izzy’s curly dark hair out of her face. We went over this. Your grandfather kindly volunteered to look after you while I work. He even sounded excited about it. You should be grateful.

But he’s a pirate! He wore an eye patch to my birthday party, Izzy exclaimed.

Isabella Grace Pérez-Roberts! I explained this to you already. He has a weak eye, and he needs to wear an eye patch for treatment, her mom scolded.

Izzy scrunched her eyebrows, still not convinced. Her mom sighed. Relax, sweetie. He’s just a sweet old man. And I expect you to be on your best behavior.
