    After We Meet

    JAMIE CAMPBELL

    Chapter 1

The world is so very different now. Or I should say, my world is so very different now.

    It’s all because of Garlind.

He found my bunker, he found me, and now we’re on an adventure to get rescued. Once we find a Ship in the sky, we can be rescued. We can leave this horrible place and live permanently in the sky.

No more rain that burns our skin.

No more mutant animals roaming around, ready to eat us.

    No more hunger.

    No more cold.

Everything is going to be so much better and I can’t wait until we finally find a Ship. If they exist. Garlind assures me they do but I have yet to see one with my own eyes.

And my parents were scientists, they told me always see things for yourself before you believe anything. They were talking about experiments but I know they would say the same thing about the Ships now.

We continue walking down the desolate highway that once carried cars going to all different places. People had jobs, families, education, and hobbies back then. They had to be somewhere all the time.

Now, it’s just Garlind and me.

The few cars remaining have been frozen in time, rusted, and given over to the masses of vines that crept in from the forest. The road is cracked in lots of places and that creates tripping hazards.

I’ve tripped over an uncountable number of times today. Maybe I’m tired and not really picking up my feet when I step. Perhaps the world is a little tilted today and I haven’t adjusted.

Ahead is a massive billboard that was probably brightly painted before the world ended. Now, the paint clings to it like a drowning person grappling for a buoy and stay afloat.

"The Country Homestead, Garlind says as he squints to make out the words. I wonder what they have there."

"I think the more important question is what remains there," I reply with a smile. Garlind gives me a wink in return.

He’s very easy to be around. I like him. I wonder if any of the other people still alive out there are like him. Maybe they all are. More likely, he’s one in a million.

Garlind’s deep brown eyes light up
