Chapter 1
I’d heard of must-see TV before. I always rolled my eyes and thought they were seriously overselling the program. Whatever it was, it was most certainly not must-see TV.
This, though, this was must-see TV.
It was the final of Next Mega Model and the contestants had been whittled down to two. One of them just happened to be my best friend Cleo.
She stood with the other girl, their hands linked and the hope gleaming in their eyes while the presenter paused. They were mere seconds away from announcing the winner and it felt like they were dragging it out for all it was worth.
Come on, Cleo. Say Cleo. It has to be her,
I whispered under my breath.
The show was live, beamed directly to our TV set from downtown Los Angeles. It was a closed recording, otherwise I would have been front and center to cheer her on.
I was surrounded by people—all friends Cleo and I had known for most of our lives. The living room was completely packed but there wasn’t a sound between us while we waited.
Cleo deserved to win the modelling competition. She was absolutely gorgeous and clothes loved her. Not to mention the camera, they practically had a love affair going on. If she came runner up, there would be no justice in the world.
Just say it already,
I said, earning scathing looks from everyone there. They were all thinking it, just too shy to actually say it out loud.
"And the winner of Next Mega Model is…"
I stopped breathing.
My heart raced in my chest.
It wasn’t going to be Cleo. She was going to be robbed and so devastated. They would pick the other girl and she would have her dreams crushed.
But it had to be Cleo. She was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen. She had a real future in modelling, she’d won so many challenges, she had a kind heart. She was the entire package.
Just say it already!
"…Cleo Frost."
Everyone in the room jumped to their feet—including me—as we clapped and cheered. On the screen, Cleo’s eyes welled with tears as she gave the other contestant a hug and stepped forward to accept her prize.
A real modelling contract awaited her, along with all the contacts the show would open up for her. Cleo was really going to be a model, she was going to get her dream career, it was really happening.
While everyone was still dancing around and hugging each other, I slipped my phone out of my pocket and sent Cleo a text. I wanted to be the first one to congratulate her.
The show abruptly ended after the big reveal—they probably ran out of time. The credit rolled over Cleo’s happy, stunning face. That was my best friend, ladies and gentlemen. The next mega model. I couldn’t be prouder.
I also couldn’t linger.
Slipping out of the party, I wished I could stay for the rest of the evening. We’d all sit around sharing stories of how we knew Cleo would make it even when she was just a kid. I had the most stories out of them all.
But it wasn’t to be. The Mega Model final coincided with the premiere of my new television show—Crompton High. If I didn’t get my butt down to the premiere screening, I was going to be in hot water.
Unlike the Mega Model final, the premiere was a more casual affair. Instead of wearing an elaborate evening dress like Cleo, I was in jeans and a plain top. Media wasn’t allowed into our private screening but there would be cameras around. We had to be on our best behavior but the studio would get final say on what made it into public domain.
I left my chauffeur-driven car and headed into the studio. Catering had set up a table of snacks while someone else had placed a bunch of couches around a large screen in the courtyard. We had our own outside living room, complete with lamps that glowed orange and provided just enough light to see.
Merrick Moon was already there.
