JAMIE CAMPBELL
Chapter 1
Hannah had been waiting her whole life for this moment. She was in the back of a jeep, the wind blowing her hair all over her face, and the jungle was just a blur around her.
Her heart was soaring as she took it all in. The heat didn’t worry her. The constant bumping of the road underneath the car wasn’t on her radar. Not even the mosquitoes could bother her.
She was living her dream of going to Africa to help with the endangered wildlife. She was here for a purpose and she would contribute in any way she could.
And she would do it all with the boy beside her.
Hannah linked her hands with Harry’s, grinning like an absolute fool. She had to yell to be heard over the rumble of the engine. Can you believe we’re here?
He nodded, his eyes shining with excitement. They’d waited three years to make this journey. They graduated college just a month earlier and spent every waking minute afterward in preparation for the trip.
To the pair of them, animals weren’t just things that happened to co-exist alongside humans. They were everything. They were the reason they got up in the morning and the reason they had worked such long hours studying.
Animals were the lifeblood of this planet and they were determined to look after them. Animal conservation wasn’t just a luxury, it was a necessity. With so many animals being on the endangered list, something had to be done.
So they signed up for volunteer positions and counted down the days to today. Not even a twenty-hour journey to reach the plains of Africa could dampen their spirits.
Although, admittedly, Hannah would love to have a shower. There had been no time after they’d landed and a real, working bathroom would be hours away from their camp.
It was a small price to pay.
The jeep bounded over rocks and almost threw them out of the backseat. Both Hannah and Harry held on to a steel bar over their heads and didn’t let go. If they got lost out here, nobody would ever be able to find them.
It was five hours into the journey before Hannah saw her first majestic animal. In the far distance, she could just spot a rhinoceros. He was alone, grazing, and completely unaware of their presence.
She eagerly tapped Harry and pointed. His mouth immediately dropped open. They watched the amazing animal until it was no longer in sight.
That…that was what they had come for. The rhinoceros were severely endangered and their numbers had dwindled so low that they were at threat of extinction. They weren’t going to be able to save them all, but maybe they could play a part in their conservation.
After all, if everybody did just a little bit, it would add up to something huge.
And remarkable.
And maybe even change the world for the better.
After another few hours of treacherous driving, the jeep entered a clearing and stopped. Hannah looked around, trying to work out why. It seemed they were in the middle of nowhere.
This is where we make camp,
Justine, the head veterinarian, said as she jumped out of the driver’s seat. Her dark hair was swept back into a tight bun on the top of her head. Hannah vowed to do the same to hers so it didn’t keep getting in her face.
Hannah and Harry followed, still unsure about why this place was chosen. It seemed to be a random area to stop and make camp.
Are we almost at the main camp?
Harry asked.
Justine laughed. "This is the main camp, newbie. The whole country is our workplace. Sorry if you were expecting the Hilton."
He wasn’t. Neither had Hannah expected anything remotely luxurious. They did, however, think there would at least be a tent to sleep in away from the mosquitos.
Two other jeeps pulled up alongside theirs, filled with a mixture of vets, volunteers, and two security monitors. They all started making themselves busy by pulling out supplies and getting started on making the camp.
Hannah was relieved when she saw tents being dragged out. They wouldn’t have to sleep in the elements
