Most know of me or at least have heard my tale. Certainly you would recognize my crimson, hooded cloak. You've been regaled by the story of my battle with a wolf.

But as with most stories, that was only a small part of my life. And legends discard certain truths. Forgotten with each retelling was how the wolves I fought could also become men.

My beloved Jonah, too, remains shrouded in the mists of time. Nothing is mentioned of all we meant to one another. Of the family we created and sent out into the world. No one speaks of the bonds we shared, or how he changed my life forever.

Yet, after becoming his, tumultuous times lay ahead for us both.

Once Upon A Time…

Samantha Grant woke with a start, a dark ominous feeling jerking her from deep sleep.

Her mind was slower to follow.

Thoughts spun in hazy circles, leaving her foggy, confused.

And strangely apprehensive.

Sami looked around her room. Safe and sound in her own bed.

But something...

It felt as if there was something she needed to remember.

A rush of fear, tinged with panic, zipped along her nerves. Brought goose bumps prickling up her arms. Something seemed terribly wrong.

Her heart thumped, hard, loud. Blood rushed in her temples. She sat up. Shoved back the tangle of her long red hair. Studied her bedroom more thoroughly.

Nothing seemed amiss, other than the sunlight—shining bright behind the curtained window with an early afternoon slant.

She never slept so late.

The small room remained as always, decorated long ago by her Gran.

Paintings—from the stories Gran always told—of amazing creatures right out of magic and myth, from wondrous dragons, to stunning unicorns.

Sami’s apprehension, the tinges of fear, slowly began to dissipate.

It must have been from some fleeting, easily forgotten nightmare.

That was all.

Calm returned the longer she studied the paintings. Travelled down the lane of memories, some painful, with Gran gone now.

Until more recent happenings started to come back to mind.

Yesterday afternoon.

The picnic with Jonah.

Her love...

And now, her lover. Her blood warmed remembering his hungry kiss. His sweet touch.

More memories suddenly jumped to her thoughts.

Rampaged.

Fear and panic sharpened. A building storm roiled in her stomach. Sami trembled as all of the previous night replayed in her head with terrifying clarity.

Men.

Changing by the light of the moon. Into huge, vicious wolves.

A ferocious black beast, attacking.

Biting her.

Though sunlight warmed the room, Sami shivered, clutching the blankets tighter to her throat.

Another massive wolf, one with dark reddish fur, and crimson eyes that glowed in the moonlight.

He hadn't harmed, but rather, protected.

Stiffening, Sami rolled to the side of the bed.
