Amber Kallyn

One of those rare breeds, Amber Kallyn is an Arizona native who can trace her family’s history through six generations in the state. She lives with her four very active children. Included in the menagerie are four cats (though there’s always room for more) and an adorable baby ball python. Amber loves the paranormal, from dragons to werewolves to vampires. She’s currently at work on her next book, probably running around the house acting out a fight scene with her collection of swords and daggers. Or maybe, wishing she had claws to practice the other fight scenes. A voracious lover of the written word, Amber found at an early age that she could read fast. Really fast. She devours novels by the day, novellas by the hour, and is always looking to get her hands on more. Volume Three: Obsessions

Most know of me or at least have heard my tale. Certainly you would recognize my crimson, hooded cloak. You've been regaled by the story of my battle with a wolf.

But as with most stories, that was only a small part of my life. And legends discard certain truths. Forgotten with each retelling was how the wolves I fought could also become men.

My beloved Jonah, too, remains shrouded in the mists of time. Nothing is mentioned of all we meant to one another. Of the family we created and sent out into the world. No one speaks of the bonds we shared, or how he changed my life forever.

Yet, after becoming his, tumultuous times lay ahead. Like my love, I became a wolf, tugged by the call of the moon. I learned the tales Gran told long ago were all too real. That there were others, like Jonah and I, living in the Dark Forest just outside my village.

And one of them wished to destroy the bonds of our love.

If you are truly curious, then sit for a while.

Join me and discover for yourself the complete tale.

The truth behind the woman with the dark red riding hood.

    Once Upon A Time…

Beneath the bright and heavy moon, two massive shadows ran side by side. Wolves—yet, not merely wolves—darted across a grassy, rolling meadow. Though neither appeared so, both were human, even if they now wore the shape of their animals, commanded and unleashed by the full moon above.

The larger, dark auburn wolf stopped suddenly. Peered around the hills. A slight breeze ruffled his russet fur. He sniffed the air. Ears perked when he caught a scent. He ran again, moving near silent on soft paws.

The smaller wolf's fur glinted a lighter red in the moonlight. She ran with mate, though her movements were slower, unsure. The newness of this first shift left her unbalanced. But mate never ranged far from her side, no matter how awkward she remained.

He slowed and nosed her neck fur. Danced in circles around her with soft teasing yips. She spun to keep him in sight. Lost her footing. Fell on her rump.

With a glare, she yipped sharply.

    Nipped at his ear.

He grinned, tongue lolling out. With a softer, rumbling woof—almost a laugh—he nudged her back onto wobbly feet.

For hours they played, chasing one another, dodging after small prey. Eventually she began to figure out all the newness.

    And the wildness filling her.

They reached the edge of a sprawling meadow. The start of a thick forest. Mate darted into the shadows. Howling joyfully, she followed, becoming more surefooted on four paws, rather than two feet.

Mate jumped onto a broad fallen log. Tipped his head to the moon above. His howl called to her. To join in. She looked at the glowing orb in the sky. Silvery light filled her with a humming warmth.

    Their voices rose.

    Twined together.

In the far distance came echoing calls. Fierce howls of others, beasts on the hunt. But not for small prey. They hunted for her and mate.

    Still, they were far.

And obviously didn't concern mate at the moment. He shoved his nose in the ruff at her neck again. With a playful bark, he dashed off. She chased, staying close.

They slipped deeper into the colorful, autumn drenched forest. Dodged around trees and bounded over fallen logs. Her heart was a rabbit-beat in her chest. Her blood pumped hot and fierce through her veins at the thrill of this faux hunt. Laughter bubbled inside her.

Once more mate abruptly stopped, this time, directly in her path. Her claws scrabbled on the ground. She slid clumsily over the colorful, leaf strewn dirt. Thumped against his side. They tumbled over the forest floor in a tangle of limbs.

Mate rolled to his feet, grinning. She woofed softly as she stood. He nudged her in front of him with a low yip. It was her turn to run. To play the prey.

    And he would be hunter.

Anticipatory thrills shot through her. Raised the thick ruff of fur along her back. At his low, signaling howl, she was off.

She couldn't outrun mate, but she could be canny. Even if his second warning howl came far too soon. She hadn't gained nearly enough distance between them.

But the wildness inside was a growing voice, telling her what to do.

Instantly diverging from her initial plan, she ducked into a dense copse of trees, where shadows darkened the ground and thick underbrush tangled at her fur. She crisscrossed a wide area to spread her scent. Taking advantage of her smaller size, she crept into a small hollow at the base of a tree, hidden by leafy bushes.

Once mate passed her hiding spot, she'd run back the other way. Calmly, she laid her muzzle on her paws and settled down to silently wait.

    His scent hit first.

She tensed. The urge to rush out, to greet him, was a loud, instinctive call.

    Mate.

    She resisted, enjoying
