True Ghost Stories And Hauntings - Granger T Barr
Introduction
This book is the third book in my trilogy about ghosts. The other two books covered true, real-life stories from in and around Britain. However, through popular demand, this
The words apparition, haunt, phantom, poltergeist, shade, spectre or spectre, spirit, spook, wraith, demon, and ghoul. The most popular term used to describe these shadowy apparitions is a ghost.
They are incorporeal and invisible to the naked eye, but some people with psychic abilities can see them. Ghosts were once accepted as part of folklore and belief systems, but scientists now know that ghosts are a reality in many ways.
The range of the abilities of ghosts varies depending on the nature of their existence. Most spirits can appear in visible form to humans, and some can affect objects or living beings. Animals can see a few ghosts, and some can move through solid objects or pass from one place to another. One form of spirit is an apparition, an exteriorised projection of a living human being and has no separate existence from that person.
There are many reasons why a human being becomes a ghost after death. According to the Bible, the person did not receive a proper burial. Beliefs in reincarnation include the idea that a person will become reincarnated after death.
Many ghosts are also said to serve as guides, protectors, or messengers to those who have died and wonder what happened to them.
At various times, the word ghost
has had such varied meanings that it seems appropriate to compare its uses over time. However, the earliest sense of the word is the one most used in our present-day language—that of a dead person who has appeared to an individual in bodily likeness.
The term thus came to be associated with spirits or demons from the underworld, which were regularly seen and were also thought to inhabit earthly bodies. The concept of ghosts as souls seems to have arisen out of this sense.
The term ghost
was also used to describe a spirit or soul that has returned from beyond into other realms, whether good or evil. The idea of returning souls is found among ancient civilisations. For example, the Incas believed that dead people return to their homes in the realm of their ancestors, where they eat food and drink, and these offerings brought back to the place where the dead person lived for continued nourishment. Other civilisations also shared this concept. For example, there was a belief that departed souls return to the mountains or mountainside in ancient Greece, a belief reflected in Eleusis.
The idea of spirits returning to their homes was also found in ancient Egypt, a view captured in the Book of the Dead, which stated that the Ka
(soul) returns from travelling to an everlasting place from which the dead do not return. The word Ka
had such an abstract sense that it was sometimes translated as double
but could also be interpreted as a person's identity or personality.
The Ancient Romans believed that the dead visit family and friends who bring food to their homes. The term faenum
comes from the Latin word fama
, meaning report.
The Roman belief was that the dead could be called back to their homes by anyone who wished to see them.
The ancient Greeks believed in Hades, the realm of the dead in which souls thought to reside, and in Elysium, the realm of souls after death where there is no pain. Ghosts were also part of Greek mythology. Of all the mythical creatures, ghosts possessed the most human qualities. These ghosts were invisible to everyone except their victims, and they caused disturbances such as knocking on doors, moving objects or manipulating the hair of their victims. Homer describes a ghost in the Odyssey as an image, soul or shade.
The Greeks also considered ghosts as possessing many of the characteristics that we recognise in present-day ghosts. They believed that all individuals have a double of some sort, and it is this double that survives death.
The History Of Ghost Stories
What is the history of true real ghost stories?
Ghost stories are a popular subject of folklore, stories that tell about things that appear about the dead, often with a supernatural connotation. This includes the tales of ghosts appearing to live people. Ghosts have appeared in many cultures worldwide, but they usually represent an unresolved spirit or a restless soul.
The earliest recorded stories may be ghostly found in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, but such occurrences date back to prehistory.
The first true documented ghost story was written in the world during the 7th century B.C., and it was told by a woman named Lady Yang of China. Lady Yang lived during the Shang Dynasty, and when she was alive, she was a wealthy aristocratic woman.
However, after her death, her family got rid of all her possessions, and she became a forgotten ghost. She lived in a cave near the town, but she wasn't alone because the cave also served as a tomb for many children sacrificed to an evil water god. After Lady Yang died, she became a ghost, and she started to talk to the children who were trapped with her. They told everyone in the town that they heard strange noises coming from the cave.
The townspeople tried to investigate, but none could see Lady Yang or hear her talking. However, not everyone who went into the cave disappeared or died, so eventually, someone entered on purpose.
The person who entered heard strange noises and saw a beautiful woman dressed in red moving back and forth in front of the corpses of the children. When the person asked Lady Yang about her clothes, the children trapped with her started talking to the man and told him that Lady Yang was their mother. Lady Yang then started to terrify
