    Mounted by the Minotaur

    The monster is close.

This knowledge is nothing but instinct, yet Theseus is as certain of the looming confrontation as he is of the ball of string dwindling in his hand. He's nearing the center of the labyrinth, with its intricate twists and turns. Above him—above the cavern and the earth that rise up and up to the open sky—the palace of Knossos must carry on its normal rhythms of life. Nobles and royalty move about their pampered existence, unaware or not caring about the tributes who have been led down below to die.

Theseus ordered the other prisoners not to follow him deeper, abandoning his fellow sacrifices near the gate that bars their return to the palace. And so he is alone as he nears the end of the winding and arduous path.

His footsteps have carried him ever inward, deeper and deeper into the structured illusion of chaos. Perhaps if he had a lifetime, he could use logic to unlock the intricacies of the labyrinth. As it stands, he is grateful for the precious gift bestowed by King Minos's daughter—even as he experiences a twinge of guilt for beguiling her when he will never return her devotion. If it weren't for the string unspooling behind him, he would have lost all sense of where he is by now. He would be a wandering spirit, certain to die of starvation before even reaching the monster at the center of the maze.

At last he rounds a final corner and steps from claustrophobic shadows into a surprisingly cozy lair. Woven rugs and tapestries adorn a high-ceilinged space, with oversized benches—plush yet unmistakably sturdy—scattered artfully throughout. There is a large lyre in one corner, and an inviting metal brazier crackling warmly at the very center of the cavern. The walls have been painted with vivid murals, mostly of the sea, and smoke from the fire escapes up through a hole in the stone above.

This does not feel like a lair, Theseus realizes.

    It feels like a home.

There is no way the monster crafted such a space without help. These gifts and furnishings—Theseus can't call them luxuries when they are such a scant bulwark against the gloom—can only have come from soft-hearted Ariadne. Theseus wonders
