    A TRIBUTE TO A FATHER

It has truly been a while since you and I have spoken, but I am here to tell you that I have been working on something very special. I’ve finally discovered where I fit in with all that you have bestowed upon me, and here it is: my dedication to you.

As a family, we explored America, Asia, and Europe seeking culture. However, we didn’t expect to discover rare comic book shops, witness Dick Tracy fight crime on the big screen, or compete in a contest of Mortal Kombat.

You always knew what was cool, and after an incredible, twenty-nine year experience with you, I thank you for sharing your life interests with me. You were an everyday hero in my life, and it is because of you that Become Wanted even exists.

It’s late, and the city is well at rest. Steam from a manhole cover outside of a run-down, red-brick building rises up to the loud crackle of a flickering neon sign that reads: The Vantage Point Hotel. Emitting from the electronic device, sparks shower down onto the cold asphalt where a black sedan pulls up. The secretive driver shuts off the engine and steps out of the vehicle with a document in hand. He is tall and rather developed, wearing a khaki trench coat over a crisp, white collared shirt fitted with a black tie. It’s Michael Gibson, the great detective of Freeland. The legendary operative takes a moment to gain his bearings, pockets the file, and proceeds to enter the hotel.

As my eyes adjust to the pale glow of the flickering fluorescent lights above me, I quickly take a glance at my surroundings. Must remain vigilant. A rancid smell fills my nostrils as I casually approach the front desk. The furniture and walls are stained a deep tar brown from years of cigarette smoke. I look ahead. The floor is riddled with fresh, muddy footprints. With the exception of the lonely front desk clerk, the lobby is clear.

I carefully make my way to the divided staircase behind the front desk. The clerk is a slender, middle-aged man, condemned with a poor excuse for a mustache. He didn’t even notice me enter the lobby. From the bright, colored lights bouncing off his narrow face, it appears that he has a small television box tucked away under the counter. I can faintly hear the voice of Susan Winters. I tune in. It’s another special report about that madman who calls himself, Dr. Noir. Once out of the clerk’s field of view, I rush up the stairs to the third floor.

At the top of the stairs, I peer around the corner and with caution; I proceed down the vast hallway. Reading the room numbers to myself as I journey through, I finally
