    Past a vine-covered cave entrance, which was hidden from all but the sharpest of eyes, in the craft room of the Fates, Lach had a headache. She’d looked a little too deeply into the red thread in her hand while preparing to assess and measure its life length, and now the headache was making it impossible to get into the regular flow of her work.

    She set down the thread and the measuring tape.

    The headache was focused in the center of her forehead, and she was fighting off the rising concern that she may need to take a break.

    The craft room of the Fates, where the sisters Chloe, Lach, and Atty spun, measured, and snipped the life threads of mortals and other beings, was designed to be comfortable and supportive of long working hours. Having a headache—or any kind of discomfort, really—was so out of the ordinary for Lach that it had taken a moment for her to recognize it for what it was.

    And she was having a hard time placing why it would be there.

    The room, always a comfortable temperature, with a meditative ambient lighting that was neither the brightness of day nor the full dark of night, was suddenly beginning to feel a little too heavy to Lach.
