Tamara’s office was a mess.
Hub Boss Tamara, of the Northernmost Rim Hub Station, was a plump, grandmotherly figure in her late fifties. She wore her gray hair in its typical high bun, and, as usual, despite the present emergency, her Hub Boss uniform (navy blue with black piping) was well-pressed. Every button shone, and she could still catch a whiff of the bergamot and fennel perfume she’d applied much earlier that morning to bolster her spirits.
She’d needed every little bit that she could muster this week.
The station had been feeling more and more unsettled over the past few months, and things were coming to a head today.
They needed to neutralize the extra magic on the Tinsleberry Gate before the Inspector was forced to return to headquarters and make his report.
And they were running out of options.
Tamara sat cross-legged on the firm pillow which she kept on the hard chair of her desk, scowling at the papers spread across the room on the utilitarian desks and tables and the low-quality gray carpet on the floor. Papers covered with lists covered every flat surface, as though a blizzard from a papermill had blown through and dumped a whole storm’s worth across every table, desk, and floor.
If they got much more paper in here, the station agents would have to clean out this office with shovels.
The only sound in the room was the shifting of pages, and the occasional clearing of a throat, as the four people
