Tara Byte was a unique child. At a young age, she began to show a love of space and the subject of space travel, winning all the science fair projects her online elementary school had to offer. She sent all her projects to the local museum in hopes NASA would hire her immediately. The museum sent her a letter back telling her that unfortunately they were not affiliated with the space program and that she was too young for a job. However, this did not detour her and only pushed her to achieve more.
She also excelled at some of the strangest things and because of that, her curious mind had taken her on many wild adventures. Like the time when she was younger and had found five puppies all alone in the summer desert, abandoned by their mother. They were covered in dirt, hot, and clearly frightened. Gathering them up, she took them back to her home where she cared for them until they were in good health and raised them for a month.... only to find out on their first vet visit that they were actually coyotes. After sightings of a female coyote she deemed their mother, Tara had let the pups back into the wild. Throughout her childhood, her curiosity led her on many more adventures.
She was also quite active. Tara had tried a lot of things from rock climbing to tennis, even taekwondo. Through it all, her parents encouraged her curiosity and supported every new activity she wanted to try. Since she was an only child, her parents involved her in everything they did and tried to make sure she had everything she needed, often giving her many things. The most memorable gift she got from her parents was on her birthday when they spent a pretty penny on a gorgeous bracelet for her. It had a silver and titanium band inlaid with diamonds. Attached to it was a circle lined with diamonds as well. On top of the circle, four beautiful sapphire arrows were engraved. Each arrow was pointing in a different direction: north, south, east, and west. Her mother locked it on her wrist the moment she opened it, telling her,
Don't worry about losing it, it won't come off.
She hadn't taken it off ever since; with its titanium build, it never needed cleaning.
The small family liked to spend their time together, going to carnivals and museums; bookstores, and their relative's houses. Sadly, whenever they did go to relatives, Tara had no cousins to play with, so her father usually kept her preoccupied while the rest of the adults talked and enjoyed themselves. Nearly every Sunday night, they would huddle under a pillow fort with a huge bowl of popcorn, and watch movie after movie, until Tara's eyes were heavy with sleep. Once the last movie ended, Tara's father would gently pick her up and carry her to her room which glowed in the dark from the many stars her parents had helped her put on her ceiling during one summer. These were things Tara grew to love, often finding herself cherishing these moments.
However, sometimes her parent's work would get in the way of all the time they spent together. Ever since Tara could remember, her parents had to leave for a week around New year's Eve every year. For that entire week, she was stuck inside the house with Ms. Sparks, her next-door neighbor who would turn off the tv and only play the radio, citing that back in her day, the radio was all that they had. When her parents returned, they would tell her about all the fun they had while traveling to the other countries and showed her all the tokens and gifts they had gotten her along the way. She would listen, intrigued about every little detail they shared, happy her parents were back and safe.
However, this year, her parents had a much more
