THE POWER OF LENDING AND BORROWING
INTRODUCTION
You may be among those who are asking, "What the subject of borrowing has to do with spiritual life". People borrow for various reasons; some for construction, to boost business capital and many more reasons. Borrowing is legally regulated all over the world. The most controversial and misunderstood subject in the Christian faith is weather to borrow is right or wrong. Should a Christian borrow or not? At what point should biblically borrowing be considered a sin.
By borrowing I mean taking someone property with agreement of returning back with or without interest, duration to repay may differ according to agreements between the parties. How to borrow may differ from one culture to the other and from community to community and it is as old as the society itself. In simple terms borrowing can be termed as a delayed return of property to the rightful owner.
Does the bible condone borrowing and how? Can a borrower be considered a sinner? What if I die without paying my debts will I be judged like a sinner? How does God treat debts? Does God involve himself in the business of borrowing and lending? These and many more questions will be answered in this book to help people who by one reason or the other cannot distinguish the position of the bible about borrowing. Knowledge is power and knowledge comes through investment of resources: my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. "Because you have rejected knowledge… (Hosea 4:6 New International Version).
Does the bible talk about borrowing and how? …do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you (Matthew 5:42 New International Version). This is a New Testament instruction by Jesus the founder and the finisher of our faith. Jesus says don’t turn your back to the borrower, in other words Jesus is saying is obligatory for you to lend when the opportunity presents itself and is within your power to do so.
Again, Jesus was signifying clearly that, there will always be lenders and borrowers even in the kingdom of God. Jesus didn’t say anywhere the non-borrowers will be holier than those who borrow. No. If Jesus believed in borrowing that means he borrowed too:
I know some of you will be asking for evidence, whether Jesus borrowed or not. First of all for somebody to engage in borrowing he/she must be faced with deficiency in one way or the other. The biggest question will be, did Jesus run or undergo insufficiency during his life to the extent of desiring to borrow or lend something? There are many biblical evidences to answer this question. Let us see one; He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat. (Luke 5:3 New International Version).
The boat belonged to Simon Peter not to Jesus, so Jesus had to lend the boat for that specific moment of time to satisfy his need to preach the congregation and then return the boat to Peter. Someone may define the way he/she likes but the bottom life remains, Jesus loaned a boat from Peter with a promise to return after the service.
Paul the New Testament illuminator of all time also addressed the subject of borrowing and lending when he said; If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me (Philemon 1:18). So, Paul also could take debts and this was a specific example. If he regarded borrowing as sin he could not take up-the debt of a brother. We should not jump to conclusion that every borrower is an offender or spiritually weak. I am putting the record correct. Some are stigmatized as sinners, simply because they borrowed something from someone.
The Holy Spirit has prompted me to reveal on the subject of lending and borrowing for one main reason, the devil is exploiting this area to accuse brethren. Of all the preachers I have listened on the subject of borrowing and lending, they all try to prostrate a negative position on the subject of borrowing and lending.
God instituted the industry of lending and borrowing right from the Old Testament, let us see the evidence; At the end of every seven years you must cancel debts. (Deuteronomy 15:1New International Version). Debts were legally regulated. The issue was not prohibition to borrow. Where a borrower is must be a lender. I can hear the doubting Thomas saying, this was Old Testament affair.
It has nothing to do with the New Testaments. Let us see what Jesus, the founder and the finisher of faith in the New Testament; Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. (Matthew 5:42
