Thank you Destiny Phillips for this heart-warming story that celebrates the joy that comes from creating fun memories with the ones we love.

Save Me a Piece of Christmas Chocolate Cake is a story about a grandfather affectionately called, Papa Hayes, who spends the day at home with his eight grandsons and lovely wife. At the onset we see everyone at the breakfast table on Christmas Eve. The boys are anxiously waiting to eat their grandmother’s famous chocolate cake but alas it’s nowhere to be found. They work as a team to search the house and find the cake. Ultimately, they reach their goal, learn about why their family celebrates the Christmas holiday and enjoy the cake together as a family.

Phillips weaves an exciting page-turning plot. With every turn of the page she builds reader anticipation until we are all salivating when the boys behold the cake in all its chocolate glory. Papa Hayes steps outside the room while the boys eat and instructs them to save him a piece of cake.

What stands out to me is the moment when the boys actually find the cake. Before they can seize it Papa Hayes makes them wait and uses this time to share a family tradition. He explains the reason why their family celebrates the Christmas holiday and agrees to let them enjoy this cake if they’re willing to wait for it. You get the sense that he planned this entire event beforehand and this is quite comical.

Save Me a Piece of Christmas Chocolate Cake is perfect for read-aloud time with young readers. It is an excellent independent reading choice for children ages 6-8. Parents and teachers alike will appreciate the positive messages about family, teamwork and the joy of celebrating the Christmas holiday.

This book has mirrors that allow children of color to see themselves in a positive light. This book also has sliding doors allowing children of all races to learn about the joy of family, the benefits of teamwork and positive role models of African descent. This book is a great gift for children ages 4-8.
