    Chapter 1

    Jerry & Sammy

I’M THE LUCKIEST CHILD alive. I travel through time. Today Ancient Egypt, tomorrow Greece; I hold their possessions in my hands; see into their worlds. I study their culture; learn from them...and wonder what it would be like to actually meet them!

There was a knock at Jerry’s door, so he put aside his journal to answer it. Audrey, his grandmother, was there.

Tea is ready. Your mum and dad said they’d ring at five-thirty, she reminded him.

Thanks, Grandma, I’ll be straight down. Do you want me to get Sammy?

Please, I need to get your grandad – he popped into our rooms for one of his books and I haven’t seen him for half an hour.

Probably reading it already, Jerry said.

Yes, how many times has he forgotten to come out of the annexe this time? Audrey chuckled as she turned for the stairs.

Jerry smiled before closing his door. He put his journal back onto the shelf next to all the history books and looked at the map on the wall. The blue pins showed all the places his parents had been to for work, the green pins were the digs that his parents had let him accompany them on. The yellow pin, stuck in the town of Bath, were where his parents were currently. They were on an archeological dig that had kept them away for the last five weeks.

He went and knocked on Sammy’s door. When she opened it, his eyes widened. She’d changed clothes since earlier. He took in her black cargo trousers and black top. Are we in full ninja mode? he asked.

Nothing wrong with that. She scowled at him.

Nothing at all, he said. His little sister – well two years younger anyway – was an enthusiastic martial artist who still had fairy posters on her wall, and wanted to try everything. Almost the complete opposite to him. But despite how much she might annoy him sometimes, he’d do anything for her. Well, almost. He smiled, Dinner is ready.

Yay, I’m starving. She grabbed his arm and spun him round towards the stairs.

Audrey got up as the phone rang, Stay there, I’ll get it.

She lifted the phone from its base. Hello, David. How are you? And Christine?

Good – yes, they’re here, they’re finishing up their ice cream – chocolate chip tonight.

Spoons clattered into dishes and Audrey smiled as the children looked expectantly at her. Hold on, David, they’re ready now, let me put you on speaker so they can both talk to you.

Hi, kids, said David, his voice a little tinny through the phone speaker, are you being good?

Of course we are, replied Jerry.

There was a chuckle through the speaker, and the echo of a female laugh in the background.

Well done. Your mum and I have good news. The dig in Bath is finishing early so we’re going to be home in a couple of days.

    Yay, said Sammy, while
