Chapter 1
Present Day
Brielle looked at the man and woman across the table from her. Treivorth and Ceya, the prince and princess of another kingdom—the Sama kingdom—sat still wearing neutral expressions after the brief conversation they had only moments prior. Her glance became a stare and she continuously found herself at a loss for words while tears filled her eyes. Anger, sadness and disgust filled her. She looked to her father and mother, each of whom wore the same blank expression she had just donned. Her knights were brimming with anger, each of them awaiting her command to cut down or forcibly remove the strangers from the premises. …Is this really happening?
the young druid queen asked under her breath.
Ciar sighed as he stumbled forward. His breathing was labored and he could feel his muscles whining to carry his weight. The qazzam dam leaned against a tree for extra support and clutched at his forehead. N-need to r-rest...
he told himself. He had long since stopped recognizing the woods that he was in, recognizing which direction would lead him out and back into civilization. He slid his pack from his back and set it down before hobbling off the path just a short distance. He gathered a few sticks and twigs and carried them back to near his things.
As neatly as he could, he built a small pile with them before digging into his bag once more. The qazzam pulled out a small vial and looked at it carefully, despite his blurred vision. He nodded upon deciding it was in fact the vial he was hoping it was, then threw it into the sticks, breaking it open and starting a fire for himself. Thinking as quickly as he could, Ciar realized he should build a circle of rocks around his new source of warmth, to make sure he didn’t inadvertently cause a forest fire. Several more long, painful moments passed, resulting in a haphazard circle of stones around the makeshift fire pit, and the alchemist nodded in pride at his handiwork. G-good,
he said to himself as he put his back against the tree his things were resting beside, sliding into a seated position on the ground. I-I’ve got…
he took a deep breath, f-fire…
Ciar nodded to himself once more before closing his eyes and collapsing sideways onto the ground.

Brielle hummed as she and Faolan walked behind their family’s manor. Oh, it’s so beautiful out!
she said happily. She clapped her hands together, then sighed. She looked up at the clear, nearly cloudless sky. Despite the chill of the late autumn, the sun was bright and gave off a contrasting warm sensation to the heavy, crisp air. The princess looked down at the brightly-colored leaves that crunched beneath her boots. I’m glad we have today off!
she said as they began traversing an incline.
Faolan nodded as he stretched and took a deep breath of the fresh air. I am too, Brie,
the younger druid said softly. It's such a beautiful day out...
his voice trailed off as he found himself needing deeper breaths.
Brielle looked at her brother curiously. She raised an eyebrow. Really? You don’t want to spend all your time with your pretty knight?
she teased.
Faolan flushed a deep red. I-I don't know w-what you're talking about,
he said shyly.
Oh, come on.
Brielle smiled. You clearly have a crush.
She poked Faolan’s arm repeatedly while they walked.
I do not have a crush on Adelia!
Faolan protested. No matter how pretty and smart she is!
He knew his words were not persuasive, but he felt it was better to deny such things then to admit them.
The princess chuckled. Right,
she said softly. No feelings there.
W-what about you and your crush on Chiron?
Faolan protested. A-at least I have a chance with my crush...
he spoke the last part hoping that it sounded at least a little bit intimidating or sharp.
Brielle immediately averted her gaze. Her cheeks became flushed. Um, I-I don’t have a crush on Chiron,
she whispered. Her light blue eyes stayed fixed on the colorful, crunchy leaves that lined their walking trail.
Look me in the eyes and say it,
Faolan dared her.
I already won,
she smirked. Since you admitted you do have a crush on Adelia.
I do not!
Faolan protested. And so I couldn't have admitted to it!
Enjoy your crush on the cute girl.
Brielle sighed. I think I’m getting over the idea of falling in love.
She frowned and kept her gaze trodden. The sad reality of her life and the intricate stupidities of politics made some things in per personal life feel impossible.
I don't have a crush!
At least you have a chance to get married,
Brielle said softly. She faked a smile. Despite her mood, she did not want to depress her brother.
I-if I could find anybody to be with,
