About this ebook

Being a witch is tough. Being a witch who was severely injured from a cute wizard girl is worse. Having to then spend the day at said wizard girl's house while being babysat is even worse than that. At the very least she's cute, and has a nice butt, too bad she's annoying.

Chapter Twenty: When Days Pass By

Just another day in the cabin, with me mostly rolling myself around in my wheelchair. Looking in the mirror I had finally been able to remove most of the bandages from my face. There were still bruises, discolored stains that made me cringe looking at them. My left eye however still had the eyepatch over it. I honestly didn’t like thinking about it too much, it reminded me of my legs. So I wore my hair a lot longer than before, black and covering the left side of my face to help hide any of the more unpleasant features.

Mellow kept telling me I didn’t have to hide my face, but I didn’t want to look at it. Spinel seemed to have an improved mood around me after I chose to hide the signs of injury as well. Though I wasn’t sure if that was from her guilt or if I really was prettier hiding my face behind my hair.

If I was being totally honest, some part of me didn’t even want to be here anymore. I had a duty to complete but I was sick of being injured and trapped here. Even with my newfound mobility I wasn’t much better off for movement. Using magic was tiring, and the most I had been able to stand for was about an hour and that had pushed me past my limits. At least most of my bandages were gone now and I could actually bathe on my own, not that I usually did.

Not with someone like Mellow in the house. Although she was still skin and bones. I really needed to get more food in here, Mellow hadn’t cared much for the surprise food given to us by Abby and Clive.

For now I was using my telekinetic magic to walk myself out the back door. The backyard was not what I expected. I could see a shed and a clear gravel path from there to the house. There was an old water fountain now covered in vines with a pool of stagnant disgusting water in it. Some old stone walls lay crumbling along the side of the house as if there were ruins here long ago. Even an entrance built into the hillside made of cement with large metal bars and a metal door blocking the entrance. It was locked of course, but I could have sworn I saw Mellow sneaking into here once.

I walked myself around looking at a few odds and ends. There were some yard tools buried in the tall weeds. Soon enough summer was going to fade into autumn. I would want to help Mellow prepare for the winter, but that was a problem for later.

Four of the five cats were sitting on the back porch staring at me. They were meowing to one another as if having a full conversation. I could only imagine what these abandoned familiars were saying to one another. With me being a witch I’m surprised none of them had tried to form a bond with me, but then again they must have been very loyal to their previous owners before Mellow adopted them.

There was the calico one, the orange one with black paws, the white one, the midnight black one who had a white belly and the gray one. One of them hadn’t shown up in a while, the one that had a forest gray colored coat. I know cats could disappear for long periods of time, in fact half of these cats I didn’t even meet when I first arrived here. Still they were here now except for that last one, so I was a little bit worried about what might have happened. Good news though, familiars were immortal, I’d only heard of one being killed by an actual god before.

Mellow had advised I stay away from the owlraptor pen out front. They didn’t like new scents so much. If I was being honest, I couldn’t be paid enough to approach that pen. Owlraptors may have only been about two feet tall but they were notorious hunters and had been rumored to wipe out entire farmsteads in times of famine.

At the time I just wanted to focus on exploring a bit. Colorful gems littered the area as well as herbs and plants, as did a few wild bugs. I wasn’t really looking for anything in particular but picking up a few of the odd purple gems didn’t hurt none. They were a very dark purple and had a cold energy to them. It felt a lot like home when I held these. I could see powerful potions being made with these. I tossed them into my handbasket and continued on.

Eventually I heard Mellow calling me from the house. DD, don’t go too far.

I rolled my eye. I’m fine. What was she my mom? Oh… that made me a bit sad. Maggie was pretty tall too… I didn’t want to think about that too much.

I eventually walked to the edge of the hill and looked out over it. These three massive mountains were covered in green forests and when seen from Harperia City’s walls they looked almost like the spines of a dragon, hence the name Dragon Spine Mountains. Only one village lay nestled back here with the only paved road in the area leading from the village back to the highway. With us being on the middle mountain and opposite side of the city I could only just barely gleam what could be a highway far away down the coast.

This place was pretty calming I had to admit. Looking overhead I actually saw a Pseudo-dragon flying overhead. A small bird-like lizard resembling something between a drake and a dragon. They were known to be a smart animal and easy to train but not very useful in my line of work. I needed a lot more firepower and those things did not actually have any fire breath. They were practically pray species, especially to the cat familiars.

Once we were back inside I could already feel the exhaustion washing over me. I had to sit down pretty quickly in my wheelchair. The spell worked, but I only had so much aether energy and so much concentration to work with. With time moving forward I’d get more magic to work with, but for now I had to make do with what I had.

Rolling myself to the coffee table Mellow followed me. Her eye were on me. So um, now that you’re um, exploring. I n-need to set down some um, rules.

I glanced at her. You know I like breaking rules.

I-I know but these are important to me, I hate the idea of interfering with your freedom.

I rolled my eye. "I was joking. If you’re asking me to follow any
