MOLASSES
BRAMBLEBUSH
I
M OLASSES BRAMBLEBUSH, A small chipmunk, lived in a burrow underneath one of eight old resort cabins that nestled along the shore of Big Chetac lake in northern Wisconsin. The cabins were now owned by eight different families of two legs. His cabin, cabin number one, is owned by an elderly two leg couple that enjoy spending summers there, fishing and watching for the wildlife. The old man always arrives early in the spring. If the weather is still snowy, cold or rainy he would just laugh. Nothing would dim his spirits of being in the north country surrounded by many lakes and forests. Molasses would often hear him tell friends it was his favorite place to be.
Molasses had been elected Mayor of a small clan of chipmunks that lived in and around the cabins and it was his responsibility to keep everyone informed. Every morning he would broadcast all of the latest news and happenings. He would also have to broadcast any possible dangers as well. It was a very important job.
Molasses had dug himself a very cozy nest deep beneath the cabin. He slept in a bed made with the very best and softest leaves and pine needles he could find. He also had managed to steal some bits of cloth from the two legs upstairs. At the end of a separate tunnel, he stored his food. He had collected many tasty tidbits like acorns, seeds, nuts and flower shoots. His favorite was sunflower seeds, he couldn’t resist them. A deck ran along the back of the cabin. On top of the deck, ol’ two legs had placed a flat rock. Each morning on the rock, two legs would place pieces of bread slathered with yummy peanut butter. At other times, it would be peanuts or sunflower seeds. Whenever he placed food on the rock, he would yell, Petey! Come get your breakfast.
and then go back inside.
Molasses thought, "THAT’S not my name! I’m
