    December

    It is early Sunday morning

    From the dregs of slumber

I wake to the far-off rumble of thunder and lightning

Off to the kitchen I scurry

A fresh pot of coffee to make

Coffee brewing!! Off to the bathroom I hurry

    Fresh coffee cannot be savored

Without a clean face and brushed tooth

    Done…

Faintly I smell fresh coffee wafting from the kitchen

    Aaah! Nectar of the gods

    Steaming brew in hand

I go next to the screened in porch

The storms full onslaught is upon us

Rain hammering on foliage and rooftops

    Easing into a lounge chair

I listen taking my first sip; mmmm!

    Tis good!

    The world comes into focus

The storm eases on to the next hill and dale

    Sunshine peeks out again

Two squirrels give chase playfully atop the hackberry tree next door

Somewhere, a cardinal calls to his missing mate

My wrens are also singing to each other again

Birds everywhere begin to talk of the storm

And its passing rain continues to drip and plop

Flowers and leaves glisten in the sunshine after their fresh bath

When I am outdoors I have gone to church!

I listen to God’s creatures sing their hymns to me

    My Life’s Journey

I know not where the days of youth have strayed

The years have slipped so quietly away

All too quickly my life has disappeared

I look in the mirror wondering

Who is this person staring back

I do not recognize this stranger

    Who might he be

    Wrinkles in his face

    Hair; thin turning smoky grey

    Body slowly eroding away

Like leaves from a seasoned tree

All too soon my youth has left

This life, I know not where it went

I reflect on my youth spent

All the dreams of things I wished to do

Grab the brass ring of life

    View the world’s great treasures

Drink of its sorrow and pleasures

But the ravages of work and time

    Have beaten my body down

    Now feeling the warm caress

Of a morning sun fulfills my day best

I know not where the days of youth have gone

    They just slipped quietly away

I went from dawn to dawn oblivious

Toiling hard a pauper not to be

As the days slipped away unnoticed

    My Loyal Friend

    I have a friend that’s forever true

He likes me no matter what I do

Always there for me, a true friend

Fickle he is not, nor does he follow trends

    Some days he slips away

But always back the next day

    Never more than two

    Never speaks unless I do

Feels happy or sad when I’m blue

    Even sheds a tear

    When I lose someone dear

If I do funny things or tell

Funny stories, he laughs; oh well

When toiling along a lonely road

We laugh and talk, sharing our load

He’s the best friend I’ll ever know

    My Loyal shadow

    Spring

    Tulips twist their way

    Through spring leaf decay

    Blossoms folded ever so tight

    Searching for warming morning light

    Ever so slowly they yawn

    In the cool early dawn

    Open petals beckon the day

    Radiant beauty amongst decay

A lover’s lips of brilliant Red

Again, tulip arises from the dead

    Bloodwort twist their way

    Through spring leaf decay

    Blossoms folded ever so tight

    Searching for warming morning light

    Ever so slowly they yawn

    In the cool early dawn

    Open petals beckon the day

    Radiant beauty amongst decay

The forest once more comes to life

It too rising from winters strife

    Lilly’s twist their way

    Through spring leaf decay

    Blossoms folded ever so tight

    Searching for warm morning light

    Ever so slowly they yawn

    In the cool early dawn

    Open petals beckon the day

    Radiant beauty amongst decay

    Lilly’s of purest white

Again, bringing us a reverent sight

    Rainbows

    Rainbows, I like them!

They are mystical, mysterious, oh so beautiful

I wonder what awaits at their end

I’ve heard tales of teasing laughter

Leprechauns guarding a pot of gold

    Or maybe nothing at all

    No one really knows

Still it has to make you
