    CHAPTER ONE

    This is a story about Shortcut, a young Aboriginal boy, who lives in the Outback of Australia with his animal friends.

    The Aborigines are native people of Australia who live off the land, hunting wild animals, different plants and roots.

    The Outback is populated with wild animals. These animals are different than animals that live in other countries. Shortcut loved animals and had a few of these animals as pets. One was a dingo that Shortcut raised from a puppy and was now full grown.

    A dingo is a wild dog of Australia that the Aborigines train to become hunters. The dingoes, when trained, become faithful companions to their masters. The white settlers of the Outback hate the dingo because they would kill their sheep. Shortcut called his dingo Bingo and had trained him to leave the sheep alone.

    Shortcut also had a pet cockatoo that would ride
