About this ebook

Tess and her dog walk through the forest that stretches from their back yard, and run into a strange girl wearing old-fashioned clothes—and the girl is transparent in the sunlight. This strange girl has no memories of her life, her family, her identity—nothing.

When they meander into a nearby graveyard, the girl starts to recall details of herself... and Tess starts to worry. She wants to help the girl, but at what price?

Author

Majanka Verstraete

Majanka Verstraete begged her Mom to teach her how to read while she was still in kindergarten. By the time she finished fifth grade, she had read through the entire children’s section of her hometown library. She wrote her first story when she was seven years old, and hasn’t stopped writing since. With an imagination that never sleeps, and hundreds of possible book characters screaming for her attention, writing is more than a passion for her. She writes about all things supernatural for children of all ages. She’s tried to write contemporary novels before, but something paranormal always manages to crawl in. Majanka is currently studying for her Master of Laws degree, and hopes one day to be able to combine her passions for law and writing. When she’s not writing, reading or studying, she likes watching “The Vampire Diaries” and “Game of Thrones,” spending time with her friends, or playing “World of Warcraft.”

    Dedication

For all those kids out there who love telling scary stories to their friends, and reading scary books in bed at night, wondering if they should leave the lights on or not after reading.

Hope you enjoy this story as well!

    Chapter One

The heat caused drops of sweat to tumble down Tess’s forehead. Her brown shoulder-length hair, now pulled back in a ponytail, stuck to her scalp, and her sweat-soaked clothes gave off a rancid smell. She hadn’t moved for over half an hour, except for taking an occasional sip from the glass of Coca Cola sitting next to her. The ice cubes inside the glass had melted, leaving it lukewarm.

Sunglasses shielded her eyes from the merciless sun while she browsed through a book—an adventure novel about two kids getting lost in the desert and stumbling upon a Mayan city.

Boredom had followed her like a silent spectator during the summer holidays. All her friends had fled Weirdville to spend their holidays at sunny locations, some of them even traveling all the way to Europe, but she was stuck here. Her parents had decided to spend their money on redecorating the house rather than on a family holiday, so she had to stay in boring old Weirdville, with nothing to do and no one to hang out with.

Ironically, Weirdville was experiencing the hottest summer the town had ever known, with temperatures rising to over one hundred degrees Fahrenheit—too hot for the renovations her parents had planned. Too hot to do anything except relax in a chair outside next to a makeshift pool—a cheap, plastic pool barely three feet deep—in which she dipped her toes every now and then.

Tess looked up from the book and stared at the forest running from the back of their garden. ‘Forest’ seemed too tall a word for the small group of trees that, with their dry and weathered leaves, looked like they too suffered from the heat.

Benny, Tess’s dog, a brown Labrador with the sweetest eyes and a gigantic appetite, got up from his spot next to her and waddled over to his drinking cup, lapping up some water with his floppy tongue.

Tess groaned and propped herself up on her elbows. Poor dog! The
