    About the Author

Diane Herak, a resident of Westlake Ohio, was born and raised in Cleveland where she overcame many obstacles through her enduring compassion to share her art, books, recipes and especially her friendship with others. Anyone that has been blessed to know her and share her life would certainly agree.

Raising her family, allowed little time for her to follow her dreams of writing, as well as painting. She is an accomplished artist, displaying many of her creations at her daughter’s design shop.

This is her 13th book! Diane’s other books include stories about her personal experiences in Paris, Egypt, Mackinac Island, Hawaii, The Mexican Riviera, The Caribbean, Nassau, Gettysburg, and New Mexico. Other books include a tell-all about working in a casino, and an autobiography written with her sister Rosemary titled, Silver and Gold…The True Story of Two Survivors. And the last is a novel that takes place in Liverpool, England escaping the horrors of WWII. In Search of Peace, was published in October, 2020.

Many poems have been written by my friend, one particular describes deep feelings about her visit to Egypt in 1997. The title is, Adieu Beloved Nile, published by the International Library of Poetry, receiving the Editor’s Choice Award in 1999.

She always enjoyed singing and dancing, so she auditioned for two college productions and was accepted. They were South Pacific and Show Boat.

I could go on and on mentioning that all of the years I knew her…while raising her amazing 8 children, Diane has always held a job. For example, being one of the first female foreman at Ford Motor Company, then employed at Continental Airlines in the liquor catering department. In her autobiography, she writes with candor as to the many jobs, that she was successful at.

After her third child, she became a member of the St. John’s Cathedral Choir, in downtown Cleveland, most likely because of her unique voice.

Recently, I found out that about 25 years ago, Diane enrolled at a tap dancing studio, with two of her granddaughters. She tapped, with her group in two performances, plus a special jazz routine.

This friend of mine is a devoted Mother of 8, and grandmother of 17…plus two great-grandsons. Her family is as amazing as she is. I was privileged to befriend her oldest daughter when I was 15, and that is how I became close and inspired by this author. Diane and I are still in contact, several times a week, as she currently supports my endeavor of raising my grandson. She shares much of her artwork and books, however sharing her life with us has been priceless.

She is passionate about EVERYTHING she does, which will make this book a treasure.

Sincerely written from her dear friend,

    Susan Ford

    Dedication

My first dedication is to God, our Father who is the giver of life and that which exists beyond life. Keeping faith in the way of gratitude and forgiveness, as his son, Jesus Christ forgave on the cross with his dying breath. How quickly we forget the Greatest Story ever told…the very reason that the magnificent sun rises each day, and sets, all over the world…each night.

Another sincere. loving devotion is, to my beloved parents, Nick and Mary. This accurate and thorough narrative is possible because of the love of their homeland, which inspired me to visit the country. I planned to see as many places as I could in the thirty-six days that I had dreamt of, for so long.

My next dedication is to my most amazing family…My two daughters and six sons. Deborah, Peter, Wally, David, Mark, Dale, Amy and Christopher. Seventeen grand-children and two great-grandsons. My eight children are my contribution to this time and place…they mattered so very much, beyond anything else, to be guided through childhood, educated and pray they maintain good health and prosper into their adult lives. The one priority in my heart and mind was to see them succeed along with my ability to have sufficient understanding with their problems and disappointments, that they may experience in their lives.

To hold your newborn baby in your arms, for the first time, feel their heartbeat, look into their eyes and realize that this was only possible through the loving gift of God…each child to me was a miracle, nothing less than the realization that the infant was not only meant to be…but knowing that my deepest and sincerest love would sustain him or her far beyond this life we were blessed with.

To my sister, Rosemary, who became our Father and Mother when she was fourteen, and I was eleven. Difficult times without parents…however, she managed it with perfection. After we married, we lived on opposite sides of the country, but were always close, enjoying the many stories of raising our twelve children, along with twenty-nine grandchildren, and so far…seven great-grandchildren. She always supports my creative abilities as an artist and author.

My last and definitely not least dedication is to my Jimmy…my soulmate, my spiritual companion, who arrived in perfect time when my life was confused and lonely.

He maintains a positive attitude toward life, and makes me laugh 24/7 with his amazing disposition along with his great personality. We have been together for seventeen joyous years. I am forever grateful for his mental and emotional strength.

    Introduction

One might ask why I decided to write about a country that I visited over thirty-eight years ago.

My parents were both born in Brasljevica, a small village in the mountains of Zagreb, Yugoslavia. They came to America, received their citizenship papers, had my sister and me and experienced very difficult and tragic situations.

Mother’s home, I was told, had been a simple cottage, however, conveniently located in the center of acres of vineyards along with apple and pear trees. Her Father kept busy at harvest time, making wine from the generous fruit of the property.
