About this ebook

Each of us is blessed with a “sixth sense” about danger. This book aims to underscore the importance of listening to that internal warning system and developing and improving it. Awareness is a practiced skill and can prevent good people from falling prey to those who look for easy targets. You are responsible for your personal safety. It is not the purview of law enforcement to protect us. Their job is to arrest those who commit crimes against us. We are our own first responders, and it is the purpose of this book to arm us with heightened awareness and skilled planning to avoid confrontations.

TJ Johnston

TJ Johnston founded the Kung Fu Club at Cal State University Fullerton in 1971 under Sifu Ted Lai. Under his leadership, the club adopted full contact sparring (before MMA). He became an NRA Certified Firearms Instructor in 1986 and created his business AllSafe Defense System. This allowed him to combine defensive firearms with unarmed self-defense training. In 1990, Mr. Johnston was appointed a Training Counselor by the NRA and began training instructors. He is also credentialed as a Chief Range Safety Officer and an online Professor for the NRA’s Refuse to be a Victim program.

    FOREWORD

Another book on self-defense? Oh, come on…

No, this is a violence-AVOIDANCE SYSTEM!

By understanding the elements of fighting, we can avoid most situations that contribute to a violent altercation. We will explore what causes violence and how it escalates, and then set up a systematic approach to preventing those causes from getting out of control.

Anyone who has faced a life-threatening situation knows the feeling when fear takes over and the peculiar things that happen when the red rage is in charge. We need to put into place a system that will keep us away from that threshold and warn us when the dark clouds of confrontation gather on the horizon. As the police reports show in every city, there is violence around us every day. It takes more than luck to avoid it. We need to be proactive to prevent becoming a passive victim.

It’s not difficult, but it takes a bit of the warrior mindset and an unshakeable belief that your life is worth defending. Sadly, as we pack more and more people into closer proximity and cause them to interact with greater frequency and intensity, learning to stay safe is becoming ever more critical.

If a soldier’s body is a gun, his hands and feet the bullets, then his mind is the trigger. Absence of the trigger renders the rest of the gun ineffective.

    INTRODUCTION

This is NOT another book on self-defense. This one is meant to PRECEDE all the others!

If you’ve perused your local bookstore, you’ve probably noticed that there are many books out there that will tell you how to cripple bad guys with exotic strikes or kick them into celibacy. Other books will tell you how to shoot/stab/or twist their heads till they come off. That’s not the purpose of this book. This book is designed to keep you OUT OF THOSE SITUATIONS that require physical self-defense. And from my experience, it’s easy to learn if you have a system.

My business is AllSafe Defense Systems. It’s what I do for a living: teaching people how to live their lives without fear. Some students want to learn how to fight. Some want to learn how to shoot (I am an NRA Training Counselor and train instructor candidates on teaching firearms and marksmanship). I encourage ALL of them to learn how to live defensively, so they will never have to fight or shoot. This book is that system.
