    THE LETTER

Ten-year-old Lee Harbor was sitting at his desk at his school, Humdingmayer. It was his first day. He was so buried in his thoughts; he didn’t notice his teacher was hovering right over him. Lee didn’t even note that the whole class was staring at him until his teacher pounded her ugly fist on his desk three times!

Just because you are a new student doesn’t mean you are a privileged child, said his teacher, Mrs. Barbarich, now, will you tell me what the answer to 15% of $36 is in five seconds? She said, knowing that he wouldn’t know the answer to that in five seconds. Without hesitation, Lee correctly answered the question.

$5.4, he said, without even leaving his thoughts.

Mrs. Barbrich’s jaw fell to the floor. (well, if it could, it would have).

How did you do that? said Mrs. Barbrich, gaping.

I don’t know, said Lee, unsurprised, for it had happened to him every time. Perhaps he used a calculator? suggested one of the kids in his class. Lee realized by his name tag that the kid was called Hutton, and Lee often got into trouble since Lee was the school bully. No, he wouldn’t have enough time to type in all the numbers since it was only five seconds, noted Samantha Dougleton; she was the smartest girl in school from what people had told him. Enough! I believe that he cheated somehow, so for that, I will send him to detention on his first day of school at Humdingmayer! grinned Mrs. Barbarich. By how Mrs. Barbarich was smiling, Lee could tell that this was just the beginning. He felt so mad that he stormed out of the room and stomped to the principal’s office. Hutton’s dad was the principal and, from what he saw on his desk, his last name was Riley. Lee had had enough! The principal had a massive grin on his face. Mrs. Barbarich had already told him what had happened. Go on; I already know that you think I’m a cheater. Especially because you are Hutton’s dad, you are probably even worse than Hutton himself. I don’t care what you do to me. You don’t even have proof that I cheated.
