I dedicate this book to the mentors, leaders, teachers, friends and clergy who have been examples of Christian discipleship over the span of my life. They are responsible for the inspiration and Bible investigation that have given impetus to the writing of this book.

But the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. He will judge the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness. The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O Lord, do not abandon those who search for you. (Ps. 9:7–10)

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. As the Scriptures say, ‘They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.’ For God is the one who provides seed for the farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he will provide and increase your resources and then produce a great harvest of generosity in you. (2 Cor. 9:8–10)

    INTRODUCTION

This book is designed for persons interested in living a life more in harmony with God’s will. It is structured to assist those that have read the book Living A Providential Life: Discovering Providential Qualities to Live By (LAPLB), and desire to mine this subject more deeply and/or utilize the contents in a study setting of one or more people. This study guide will attempt to go deeper and in some cases broader in exploring the subjects contained in Living A Providential Life: Discovering Providential Qualities to Live By. The intent here is to provide an organized, in-depth methodology to study the subject by utilizing an interactive approach. Every reader will have different experiences, needs and viewpoint on a subject like this. I know that I have greatly benefited from this approach in my personal study of the Bible and Christian discipleship over the years. I have found that this approach makes this study, my study. It inevitably becomes a personal journey on the subject through the utilization of an interactive study guide. When used in a group setting this type of study benefits greatly through the multiple experiences and ideas of others. The subject matter here is virtually inexhaustible. Those that have not yet read Living A Providential Life: Discovering Providential Qualities to Live By will profit from reading this book, too. May you benefit from this resource in your walk with God.

    The Nature of Providence

    CHAPTER ONE

    What Is Providence?

The idea of God’s providence manifests itself in a variety of ways. Just a few of these are listed below. Can you explain how these areas bring meaning, importance and substance about the subject to you (LAPLB pp. 1–4)?

    SCRIPTURAL PROVIDENTIAL INSIGHT

And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others. (2 Cor.9:8)

One can view the entire Bible as exhibiting characteristics of God’s providence since scripture is seen as one continuous recording of the result of the will of God upon the earth. One way this is manifested is through a historical process that is exemplified in the lives of the many servants of God and the way they bring God’s will to the human actions upon the earth. There are many examples of this throughout the Bible. Can you list six examples of men or women who were servants of God’s will in the Old Testament and briefly describe the way they accomplished this?

    SCRIPTURAL PROVIDENTIAL INSIGHT

When the storms of life come, the wicked are whirled away, but the godly have a lasting foundation. (Prov. 10:25)

What was the result of the sins of the wicked during the flood described in Genesis? A person of notable exception to this wickedness was found; Noah found favor in the sight of the Lord (Gen. 6:8 HCSB). God assigned an immense task to Noah to save God’s created life. Noah was 600 years old when the flood covered the earth (Gen. 7:6). Noah partnered with God. And Noah did this. He did everything that God had commanded him (Gen. 6:22 HCSB). This is remarkable in so many ways. The complexity and magnitude in constructing an ark 450 feet long and providing for the gathering, space, food, and care for every type of creature is hard to even imagine. What a man Noah must have been! God moved mightily through Noah to accomplish his will upon the earth. Describe below some of the specific acts that Noah accomplished as a partner with God.

We need to recognize that we are limited in our understanding of God’s providence. This we need to address early in our study.

What are the best sources (see Ps. 119:32–34) for understanding God’s providence (LAPLB pp. 6)?

What is the nature of our limitations in understanding God’s providence?

Personal Reflections on My Study of a Providential Life

    CHAPTER TWO

Scriptural Observation on the Providence of God

The scriptures provide us with a rich source of material where the providence of God is plainly visible. The lives of the most prominent Bible characters all reflect how God provided them with guidance and assistance as partners for the accomplishment of the will of God. There are so many ways that illustrate the infinite aspects of God’s providence found in the Bible. Describe three methods that you find in scripture to illustrate the providence of God at work.

    SCRIPTURAL PROVIDENTIAL INSIGHT

Then God said, "I am giving you a sign of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God and every living creature on earth. (Gen. 9:12–16)

    Reflections on my providential life:

    1. What kind of servant or partner am I for God?

    2. Do I put God’s will first or my own?

    3. What has God done for me in the past and present?

    4. What priority am I giving to God’s will?

    5. Am I living within God’s design for my life and his will?

Jesus had a high priority for humans to be in harmony with God’s will. He explains this in the Lord’s Prayer (see Matt. 6:9−13). We are reminded there that we are to pray for God’s will to be done on earth. Why? The answer immediately follows that God’s will should be done on earth like it is in heaven. This is profound. The length of time we will spend in heaven dwarfs the time we spend on earth. Our time in heaven makes our time spent on earth seem nevertheless
