About this ebook
It was a time when social media consisted of a pay telephone or a 5 cent stamp on a letter. You had to learn to adapt to living with new people, unlike any you had met before, and in some cases, you will never meet again.
If you have ever gone away to camp, private school, or college, you will relate to some of these experiences. Even if you haven’t, you will enjoy this book and chuckle, as it takes you back 50 years to a somewhat simpler time. Yes, a lot has changed in all that time, but yet, some people and experiences you can still witness today.
Lil Pop
The author grew up in a small country town, during the 1950’s, when cows outnumbered people. Like the other kids in school, he walked to school every day and walked home for lunch. There was no school lunch in grade school. Since he lived on a hill on one side of town and school was on a hill on the other side of town, he ended up walking up hill both ways. During his school years, he would add a little humor to book reports when he could. He liked to find the funny side of things. After working a number of years, he began doing roasts for people who were retiring. He has also written several eulogies celebrating the person’s life looking at their serious side and their humorous side. When he was invited to his 50th college class reunion in 2018, he began to jot down some of the experiences he had. Since most of them were from his Freshman year, he decided to capture them in a book for others to enjoy.

Getting Started
It had been a little over a month since President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the British music invasion was igniting its way into America, Vietnam was just beginning, and I was riding the train, with my father, into the city for yet another college interview.
I watched the snow spiraling downward as we rode. It was going to be a long day and snow most of it. It seems like it always snows in Sussex County. I thought about the interviews that I had so far, much without success. I had been turned down by two colleges and accepted at Rutgers. But, I really did not want to go there. After going to a small high school in Sussex County, Rutgers was a bit overwhelming.
Today, my interview was with a small Engineering College in northern New York. Their hockey team was playing in a Christmas tournament in Madison Square Garden. The administration was conducting interviews for 2 days in the city. We left the train and headed toward the hotel, where the interview would take place. As we walked along the slushy sidewalks, the snow suddenly stopped. I took that as a good sign and tried to calm my nerves.
The interview went very well. We watched slides of the campus. There were two sections – the Hill Campus, where the dorms, gym, and sports areas were located. At the top of the hill were five dorms. One was by itself. The other four were like spokes of a wheel, joined at the center by a two-story building, which contained two cafeterias, a mailroom, a lobby, a laundry room and a snack bar. The buildings were brick and seemed relatively new.
The second section was the Campus in town. It was located down town, about a mile from the Hill Campus, and was where the classrooms and library were located. The buildings here were a mix of older stone buildings and slightly newer brick buildings. There were lots of trees and space. It was a pretty campus and well maintained.
I knew my next step would be to go see the school and campus within the next few months. Sure enough, late February, my dad and I were making our north. As we approached Lake George, the Adirondack Mountains stood boldly and immense. Certainly, my road ahead would be an uphill climb to say the least. As we traveled, we kept seeing signs on the road Bump Ahead
. I kept hoping that this was not an indication for what lay ahead in my freshman year.
The campus was just like the slides with no surprises. There was
