PREFACE
W ith only a few exceptions, the blood running through my veins contains similar properties as other humans. Like you, my blood comprises mostly red cells, white cells, eosinophils, and a few other necessary ingredients. I’ve come to realize that I have one dominant cell compared to all the others. The other cell running through my body is a help cell. Although the help cell isn’t an essential component of my blood, the desire and need to help someone improve their quality of life continually runs through my veins. The metamorphosis from an inspirational speaker for over three decades, to twice published author, best uses my help cells to fill in the hollowed parts that other people experience. These voids will fill again with joy, laughter, and love.
"Hollowed Soldier," is a direct result of my compulsion to use my life experience, primarily the violent and brutal rape I endured while serving in the US Air Force, to assist other women and men in overcoming similar experiences. I remained relatively silent for 35 years about the attack, rape, and wrongful discharge, while subsequently achieving a highly successful career as an inspirational speaker, trainer, and comedienne. During this success, my rape subject rarely came up as a point of discussion and was never discussed with an audience greater than two people. The story details how, without provocation or expectation, Pandora’s Box was cracked open, and the calculated conspiracy of my rape and abrupt discharge was exposed. Once presented with the opportunity to challenge the Veterans Administration’s illegitimate decision and the wrongful discharge, I was poised to confront the good-old-boy testosterone-driven mentality of our military.
All of the characters, scenarios, and circumstances in this book are real. The motivational tools, techniques, and tips for developing an attitude of acceptance and perseverance are also quite real and well tested. It is with great pride that I share my footsteps to overcome and soar far beyond the hurdles and tragedies you may encounter.
Initially, the books "Hollowed and
Hollowed Soldier, were written under one title. In the middle of writing, the unexpected and tragic death of our only child at the young age of 32, devastated and hollowed my soul. My writing paused and my speaking ceased, while the tone of my inspirational teachings transitioned. Because I wanted to share the experiences and lessons derived from this tragedy, the original book grew too large for publication; it became necessary to spin-off the book
Hollowed Soldier."
The stories in each book are entirely different, and the emotional impact and benefits you’ll discover in each one are unique. The principles I use to remain optimistic while fighting off pancreatic cancer, and live life with a hollowed body, are used to support my husband through cancer treatment for ALL. I share these techniques and more in the book, "Hollowed - An Amazing True Story of a Woman Who Survived the Hollowing of Her Spirit, Body, and Soul."
To receive the full benefit and fill your personal hollowed spirit, body, and soul, I highly recommend you read both books. Take time when you’re reading to pause, reflect, and apply. Pause to digest the story and reflect on how it applies to your own life and the hardships you encounter. Take another moment to apply the changes you feel will help you grow and find joy in filling the hollowed parts of your spirit. It’s best to use a highlighter to mark the moments in your reading that stir-up an emotion that gives you an ah-ha.
It is with great sincerity that I say, Thank you,
for investing your time to read what I consider to be an inspirational seminar on paper.
CHAPTER 1
27411.pngBoomerang – 2012
As a child, I was always fascinated by a boomerang. It was amazing how I could throw it out in the distance and it would circle back around for me to catch. As I’ve matured, I’ve discovered that if I’m not expecting it, a boomerang could also come back around to hurt me.
28024.pngA twinge stings me directly in the center of my soul. It’s similar to a pinch you feel as a dentist injects Novocain into the soft, sensitive tissue of your gums. This pinch doesn’t take my breath away, but words can’t describe how it burns. I’ve heard people refer to a twinge like this as female intuition or gut instinct. Regardless of the name you give it, I call it my inner voice, and right now it’s screaming at me, Annamarie, watch out!
For decades this internal voice has been echoing in the bowels of my heart. I know this voice well; I’m an expert at dismissing and denying its existence. My husband, Aidar, is sitting in the car downstairs; I hear him bellow out a call for me. Annamarie, come on! Honey, it’s time to go. Are you coming?
We’ve been married for over thirty years, and he knows I don’t typically run late. He may also suspect something is out of sync with me. I’m off-kilter and edgy. The engine of the car has been running the entire time he’s been waiting. Exhaust fumes have built up like a thick fog of pesticide. I choke and cough when I finally enter the garage.
Stop yelling! I’m here; I’m here. Let’s go.
We haven’t even moved twenty yards down our long driveway before Aidar puts on our brakes. Our son Austin pulls up in his car and parks. I love it when he surprises us and comes home unexpectedly; I feel as if our family puzzle is complete when we’re all together. As an only child, Austin has participated in just about everything we do, but I didn’t tell him we were headed out this morning. We call ourselves the Three Musketeers
; we are indeed all for one and one for all, but it slipped my mind to let him know about this trivial opportunity.
He doesn’t even close his car door before yelling, Hey, where are you guys headed?
I’ll explain later; we’re late. We’ll be back in a little while. Will you still be here?
I’m anxious to hear his response.
Yeah, I need to do laundry; I’ll be here for the weekend.
Super. I love you. See you soon.
I hope he never buys a washer and dryer; I like it when he comes home.
Located in the center of our busy town is a small community building. It’s common practice for businesses and organizations to rent this room to host meetings and public events. Today the Solano County Department of Veterans Services is using this little facility to issue veterans cards to all of the local veterans. These cards are valuable; veterans will receive a 10 percent discount off their total purchase from a variety of local businesses. It’s a win-win. The veterans win with some savings while the merchants gain publicity and increase the number of people shopping at their store. We’ve been remodeling our home; the savings
