About this ebook

Have you ever wondered if a Near-Death Experience (NDE) can actually happen? The answer to that is “No,” unless you consider the physical body to be the essence of who you are. What you will find during one of these experiences is that your Spirit is your essence and your physical body is simply the “vehicle” that your Spirit rides in. Try picturing it this way: your body is like a car. When the car goes kaput, you get a different car. That’s the way it is with “death”. Your Spirit gets out of the “dead” body and gets into a different one.

The first book in this series explains what an NDE looks like, feels like and what in our body triggers the visions and “silent” voices that we hear. It also explains why someone who has experienced this sometimes becomes intuitive, a psychic or perhaps a savant. The author takes you on a journey that shows you how this ancient ability and understanding of “the other side” and how to communicate with it has existed since the beginning of time. Sometimes that understanding is shown to us in mythological or biblical stories, or in some type of art form. Regardless of how those stories come down to us, they are irrevocably intertwined using numbers, letters, symbols, [God], angels, gods, goddesses, alchemy or astrological/astronomical symbols. In today’s world, people use religion and science to explain the same things that our Ancient ancestors knew, and that is that there is no such thing as death. This book is the stepping-stone in learning how to “read the writing in the sky” and why it is of utmost importance to learn what Enlightenment is and where to find it.

    Author’s Note

We must understand where the word man came from and why there is controversy in the United States about why the word woman is rarely mentioned in ancient texts. It is because our language comes from a conglomeration of languages. The English word man came from the Germanic word mensch, which simply means, a human being. When Americans bicker about the words in the Declaration of Independence All men are created equal, they are off the mark if they think it refers to just males. It does not. It refers to all humans, be they male or female.

Can I suppose that statement? Yes, I can, because, to begin with, eight of the fifty-six signers of the Declaration of Independence were not born in America, and most of the other signers’ parents came from another country. Let me explain why I use that logic. In almost all other languages, the word man is neutral and does not refer to a gender. For example, in France people call their little girls il which is the equivalent of he in English. They certainly know that the girl is a girl. What they are saying is that she is a member of Homo sapiens, and they are not limiting her by confining her to a specific gender. That is why so many of our texts refer to men or a man, and not women or a woman. It is only in English that the lowercase man means male.

The wo- in woman actually comes from the word womb, making a woman a womb-man, or a man with a womb. Regardless, she is still a hu-man. For example, both Mirriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th edition and Oxford Dictionaries state that woman is derived from the Old English word wifman, with wif meaning woman. Of course, we could rephrase that and say that a man is a woman without a womb—unless, of course, you consider the prostate, which is the male uterus.

Some people believe the term Homo sapiens means to think and is a cognate of mind, which refers to when the humanlike beings first started to have rational thoughts; while other people believe it means earth-dweller. Quite frankly, I believe that both are correct, and this will become clearer as this series of books progresses and as we delve deeper into the meaning of the word mind, as humans actually have more than one mind.

To add even more to the confusion, the King James Bible, as a rule, simply cut out the words she or her, and even the word woman, when King James ordered the Catholic Bible rewritten. What we must keep in mind is that not only did King James remove most of the she and her pronouns from the new Bible, but he also uncapitalized the words He and Him unless they were used in reference to God or Jesus. This made it so that people thought that only men could attain powerful positions and communicate with God.

This man issue brought out a lot of dissension between the sexes in the United States during the 1960s because no one bothered to look up the word man other than in the dictionary. Unfortunately, dictionaries do not list the word Man; they list only the word man and describe a man as a male person. The first person is not gender specific—unless you have read the Bible or gone to a church or temple where they assigned that role to Adam and then to Moses, Noah, Abraham, and on down the line. That is where the word progenitor came to refer to a male forefather, which is simply inaccurate. If it were true, the story of Jesus and the other masters before Him would be total lies, as the women in those stories seem to have been able to be progenitors without male sperm. In fact, there was no gender specificity until the second wife of Adam was written into the Christian Bible. And for those who have been intellectually stunted by the King James Bible, Adam got rid of his first wife, Lilith, because she demanded to be his equal. The patriarchal Western religions certainly couldn’t have that, so they replaced her with a supplicant wife named Eve. Of course, the Greeks had a different name for Lilith. They named her Pandora. Pandora was moulded out of clay by Prometheus. This means Pandora was a virgin, as was Lilith and Eve. Christianity jumped on this bandwagon and named their virgin Mary.

If we go back even further than the Germanic, we find that the etymology, or linguistic study, of the word Man leads us to the Proto-Indo-European and Sanskrit word Manav; in Hindu we find Manu, which means the first person of mankind. It does not say whether the first person was a male or a female, as the Bible does. Here’s the other catch: Jesus and God are referred to by Him, His, and so forth, with a capital H, which means they have no gender. This also tells us they are of the spirit world and not of the physical world.

Almost exclusively, chapters that men wrote were put in the Bible, but the marvelous writings of Mary Magdalene, whom Christianity turned into a whore, were not put in the Bible. Even the book of Esther, which means Star; Venus; Isis, was, as some believe, most likely written by a man—possibly Mordecai. But that is not necessarily true, because research shows that oftentimes a book in the Bible was actually written by a woman but was given a man’s name.

Here is what is interesting about the planet Venus/Esther: it was given the name Lucifer by the church. Now that you know this, do you really think the King James Bible did not demonize women? Since the planet Venus is considered the planet of love and balance, you’ve got to wonder what King James was so afraid of. And in case you hadn’t noticed, the Christians completely left out any teachings by women, and they usually refer to women in a derogatory way, yet it is mostly women who flock to the churches and temples.

When you read the following, please understand that the words brother and priests, for example, also denote humans, not males. They refer to human beings who are no longer held down by the bonds of the physical world.

I’ve also seemingly thrown chapters in that you might not think fit in a particular spot. Rest assured—they do. You will also notice as you read along that, all of a sudden, I jump from a right-brain thought pattern to a left-brain thought pattern. That is so you can understand how utterly different the parts of your brain work.

There is a certain part of our body that is sacred, and running down the center of our body is the cylinder of a lock that can be opened only when we use the key that fits that lock. That lock and key open the door to what religions call the Holy House or the Holy Temple, where God expresses Himself through us, in what they term the name of Jesus.

I know! I know! Most churches in the Western world have told us that God is found only outside of us, which is impossible, because if this were true, we would not exist. In fact, NASA-funded researcher Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa—perhaps without knowing it—supports our ancestors’ beliefs that there is some unknowable, unseeable, untouchable energy that propels us, enters into us, and flows throughout us. Our ancestors called this energy the Holy Ghost, but in scientific fashion, plasma physicist Scudder calls the portals through which this Holy Ghost phenomenon occurs X-points or electron diffusion regions that exist in space. He says, They’re places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the Sun’s atmosphere 93 million miles away.¹ This means the ghostly (Holy Ghost) energy comes directly from the Sun. Observations by NASA’s THEMIS spacecraft and Europe’s Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day.² It’s almost as if the Milky Way is breathing in and out.

Our ancient ancestors were fully aware of this gift-giving energy and called the Sun their Lord. They knew that without the Sun’s heat they would freeze, and that without the Sun’s rays they would starve. Because of this, they followed the path of the Sun diligently and worshipped it and blessed it so it would have life everlasting.

But that’s not all. On December 21, they noticed that the Sun appeared to be dead. They begged and pleaded with the Lord to come back to life, and after three days, it did. This, of course, gave the people the belief that this great lord could hear their prayers. In actuality, this annual phenomenon occurs when the Sun (seemingly) stops its southward journey, hesitates for three days in a place where we can’t see it very well, and then turns north again. Of course, it doesn’t really do that. It is the tilt and rotation of the earth that make it appear as if the Sun is disappearing.

Where are the Sun and our tiny galaxy located in the cosmos? You can see where the Sun currently is if you follow the coordinate lines of the image in the next page.³ It is as if the Milky Way gave birth to a baby Sun that is playing at her feet. As you can also see, the Milky Way appears to have several arms. At one time it was believed that the Milky Way had four major arms, but NASA decided it has only two major arms. Those arms are Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus. They are attached to the ends of a thick central bar, while the two now-demoted minor arms (Norma and Sagittarius) are less distinct and located between the major arms.

Some say the central bar is shaped like a cigar, while others say it is shaped like a fish. Regardless of which one you choose, as you read this book, you will see how the church adopted the fish shape.

    001_a_aaaa.jpg

    NASA/JPL-Caltech.

If you were to enlarge this image, you would also see that at the center of our galaxy, the Orion spur and Perseus Arm cross each other and form an X shape. Ironically, our chromosomes also form an X.

Let’s suppose the top end of the bar is the head and the bottom end of the bar is the feet. We can then see that the North Arm and the Scutum-Centaurus Arm were generated from the Milky Way’s feet, while the Sagittarius Arm, Perseus Arm, and Outer Arm were generated from the head. As a rule, the top of something has a positive and masculine energy and the bottom has a feminine and negative energy. Going by this, we can see that the North Arm and Scutum-Centaurus came from the mother aspect of the Milky Way, while the Sagittarius, Perseus, and Outer Arms came from the Milky Way’s head, making it father energy.

But hold on a second—left is also considered feminine, and right is considered masculine; and since we’re on the left-hand side of the Milky Way, does that mean we are in feminine energy? I ask that question because, even though we all know that the planets rotate around the Sun, what many don’t know is that some astronomers say the Sun is rotating around the Milky Way at a speed of 514,495.347 mph (828,000 km/hr). But does the Sun actually do that, or is it that the Milky Way is spiraling and dragging our galaxy along with it? Some astronomers suggest that it is the latter and call the Milky Way a barred spiral galaxy.

Is it even possible for the Sun to move around the Milky Way? If it did move around the Milky Way, how is it that we’re still between the arms of Perseus and Sagittarius; and how is it that we still see the constellations, year after year, that our ancestors saw?

Regardless of which hypothesis is correct, it is suggested that it takes a mind-boggling 230,000 to 250 million years for the Sun and our solar system to make this egg-shaped loop.

I also find it curious that the M from the word Milky and the W from the word Way are polar opposites of each other, in that the M is an upside-down W, and vice versa; and that the word woman starts with a W, and that the word man starts with an M. Is the Milky Way really only the Mother and not also the Father? Is that why the word LORD is capitalized, as it is both the Father and the Mother? Of course, it is more complicated than that because sometimes [LORD] is written only as [Lord], with only the first letter capitalized, or as [lord] with no capitalization. What many don’t know is that when all capital letters [LORD] are used it refers to the names of God (YHWH). That’s because the first H (from the right) refers to the masculine aspect of God, and the second H from the right refers to the feminine aspect of God.

According to Jeff A. Benner, When the word lord is written in all upper case letters (LORD), the Hebrew behind this word is the name of God, (YHWH). Benner gives the example of Genesis 15:8 where the KJV version uses the words Lord GOD, and states— In this verse Hebrew phrase Lord GOD is written in Hebrew and "transliterates as; Adonai YHWH. The word Eloyim is the Hebrew word for God. But in Genesis 15:8 the word god is written in all uppercase because it is the KJV’s translation of the name Yahweh. Because the word Adonai means lord, they couldn’t translate this as Lord LORD, so they chose to use the word god for Yahweh and written it in all upper case letters. (Author’s Note: Just another case of a translation disregarding the actual Hebrew text). Benner was saying in the Author’s Note that the KJV, and most other Christian bibles, mistranslated Hebrew to English. (Also note that the above quote is written exactly as it is written in his website, which can be found at Jeff A. Benner, What is the difference between lord, Lord and LORD?" (Ancient Hebrew Research Center, (1999-2019), https://www.ancient-hebrew.org/god-yhwh/difference-between-lord-Lord-LORD.htm.)

Also keep this in mind: as the Milky Way spins at this great clip, she seemingly births new children (galaxies), and our galaxy is rather young in comparison to other galaxies. Astrophysicists call this recent (about five billion years old) escalating birthing process a stellar baby boom, and the area where the Milky Way’s children landed is called the "New Outer.⁷ Sounds a bit daft calling new stars children, doesn’t it? But that is what stories made up by our ancestors called them. In fact, they gave the Milky Way numerous names and said she was the goddess from whom all things were born.

Psalm 90:1–2 says this about our ever-dependent Milky Way: LORD, you have been our dwelling place in all generations, Before the mountains were born, Or Thou didst give birth to the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God. So if the Milky Way is the all uppercase LORD of the Old Testament, who was the diminutive Lord of the New Testament? Was it our Sun—or rather the Son of the LORD, as Christians call it?

The Psalm verses go on to say that it is the Sun that turns us into dust (rots us and dries us up), and that no matter what, the Sun will appear to be in the same spot in a thousand years, and that day will be the same as yesterday. From that, the saying a day is like a thousand years came to be.

Our ancient ancestors were very aware of what we call solar flares and knew that the Sun gave out more energy during certain times and less energy during others. They called the times when the solar flares created more heat, light, and energy on the earth the Lord’s anger, wrath and fury. (Romans 1:18-32, 2:5, 4:15, 12:17-21; Ezekiel 25:17; Isaiah 26:21, plus numerous other verses). The Incans, among other groups of people, also believed there were gods that sent disasters to kill people who did not respect him the way they should. Could it be that there is more anger, wrath and fury when the Milky Way (the LORD) is exhaling a breath?

Let’s skip back to the sentence that refers to the X-points, or electron diffusion regions, which—seemingly—breathe in and out to answer that question.

Could it be that not only is the Earth connected to the Sun via X-points of magnetic energy but also that the Sun is connected to the Milky Way via X-points of magnetic energy? Of course that is possible, because if you look at an image of the annual path of the Sun, you will find that it forms a number eight. When the braids of a rope are twined together, the first crossover of the ropes form an X. When the braids are crossed over the second time they form an eight, the sign of infinity. And since we are a mirror of the universe, as the Buddha said, this means the Sun is also a mirror of the Milky Way, because we have the same X shape as the arms of the Milky Way. That shape is reflected in the aforementioned X-shaped chromosomes. This means that, regardless of what the Church has told you about us being mortal, we are immortal.

How can we be sure that the writers of the Bible called the Sun the lesser Lord? Continue reading Psalm 90. Verse 6 says, In the morning it flourishes, and sprouts anew; Toward evening it fades, and withers away, but by morning all things are like the grass that flourishes anew. What is it that causes the grass to flourish anew? Some scientists call it magnetic ropes or flux ropes. It is the X-points of ropes that are within the dew that make the grass flourish, and it is these same ropes that give us life.

Every year, the people prepared for the great celestial event when the Sun died in the sky; and every year, they worshipped the rebirth of the newborn Sun (Son). Does the Bible support that statement? It does. If you return to Psalm 90 and continue to read, verse 13 begs the Sun, Do return, O LORD; how long will it be?

Today the story of this annual rebirth of the Sun is told using the metaphorical story of the birth of Jesus. Can this statement be supported? It absolutely can. When the Catholic Spaniards invaded Mexico, they found that the people regarded the Sun as their Lord. The Spaniards, however, told the natives that from that day forward, their Lord was to be called Jesus, and that Jesus was both human and divine. This, of course, left an indelible mark on the people, as those who refused to act accordingly were slaughtered. The same happened to the Native Americans. The thing is, when you hear groups of people worshipping Jesus, you should realize that deep in their memory they know they are worshipping the Sun.

What exactly does that mean? Every universe has at least one sun, and Jesus became known as the Son [Sun] of God (the Milky Way) to the Christians. Other ancient religions believed the same, but they gave the same Sun different names—such as Apollo or Helios, the temples of which the Bible says the Christians destroyed. The Sun was also known as Ra to the Egyptians and Sol to the Romans. Unfortunately, the people who came to the United States from Europe and Africa have forgotten that and instead believe that Jesus, the Lord, was a real person. Of course, throughout history there have been people who have come along and taught about the wonders of the Sun and the universe and what causes a human to come to life and then die; but it wasn’t until decades, or perhaps centuries, later that the stories became iconic.

There is one more thing you need to know about this book: everything in it is plagiarized, as are all writings in the twenty-first century. There is absolutely nothing new under the Sun that has not been written, discovered, known, or stated before. It’s just that we’ve forgotten it, or it has been hidden from us by such institutions as the church—or it could be like today’s scientists, who think they’ve discovered something new when they really haven’t. My objective is to again remind you of those forgotten things.

As Lao-Tzu, the founder of Taoism once said, the truth cannot be spoken. As soon you’ve opened your mouth to speak of the truth, you have already lied. You must find this truth from within, and that is what this book will help you understand.

    Introduction

I was lucky enough to grow up in the 1950s, when life’s illusion was in full bloom. By the 1960s, the petals on the flower had started to wilt; and by the 1970s, the poor flower was in serious need of water and fertilizer. Unfortunately, plenty of fertilizer in the form of lies had already been applied in the heat of the Vietnam War, but perhaps they applied too much fertilizer, because the war split our country further in two. People started to feel that they had they been bamboozled by the government, and they also equated this disillusionment to their churches. As this new reality set in, the churches started to lose their grip on their flock. Parishioners began to disappear, and it wasn’t long before the church doors were bolted and sheets of plywood were screwed over the doors and windows. Not only did the people disappear, but many of them became angry. Some of the disillusioned escaped to Eastern religions or drugs, while others watched football, reality shows, and March Madness on TV.

How in the world was the church going to get their flock back?

An odd variety of preachers (some of them self-professed) and TV commentators came up with a great plan to regain their control. Those who were suckered in by those leaders took to the streets, and just as can happen with any group of protestors or demonstrators, it wasn’t long before mob mentality took over. They waved placards and got in the faces of people who disagreed with them, and they misused the words of Jesus.

Not only did the mob not follow the teachings of love of the Jesus they espoused, but they also actually went so far as to kill people. This goes completely against what is written in John 7:49, which states, No! But this mob that knows nothing of the law—there is a curse on them (NIV). This verse does not refer to the law of the government; it refers to what those same people called God’s law. This law simply states that you are to love your neighbor as yourself and tells us that thou shalt not kill.

Some of the religious fanatics sneaked into the door of the government behind names like Tea Party and pro-life and turned our democracy topsy-turvy. Other groups splintered off and created secret groups that began stockpiling munitions and made a plan to take back what they called "their government." What they didn’t, and still don’t, understand was that they had no clue what the Bible is about; nor did they have a clue what it says.

The Bible is a curious work of art. It is written in layers upon layers upon layers. If you miss those layers and avow yourself to the teachings of your particular church’s dogma, you’re going to miss out on the greatest show on Earth, as the Bible is jam-packed with lessons about metaphysics. This includes such subjects as numerology, esotericism, astrology, psychic phenomena, alchemy, hands-on healing, and magic.

As to whether or not religion can be taught in schools, you have to ask yourself, Which religion? Is it the religion of a few; the most popular religion of today—which would be Islam, the religion of ancient times; any of the religions in between, such as Mithraism or Zoroastrianism; Taoism; the ancient religions of Egypt, Greece, or Rome; today’s Catholicism; Judaism; Buddhism; Jainism; Christianity; or Sikhism? The fact of the matter is that all today’s religions most likely started in India, and groups of that religion splintered off and formed new religions. We know that religion as Vedism, which morphed into Hinduism, which morphed into Buddhism, which morphed into Christianity. All these religions teach one thing, and that is that we are made up of three parts. This concept is certainly not new to the world. It is as old as the first people on Earth, and since the beginning of time, people made up stories to describe this godhead and gave the three parts different names, depending on which name was familiar to them in their area of the world. As an example, while one sect of the Hindu religion calls this triune Brahma, Shakti and Shiva, Christianity calls the same triune God in three persons or the Trinity. Each of those three parts is actually a specific energy. And as for scientists, they are finally starting to realize that everything is made of three parts, just as our ancestors professed before this information was stifled by the church.

Is this godhead of the visible, physical world? Not all of it. It is mostly of the invisible world. And although we may try as hard as we might, we cannot make the invisible physically visible.

Is religion already taught in schools? Yes, it is. It is called science, history, and literature, which often throw in puffs of mythology—another form of religion. These classes just use names and words different from those names and words in the Bible.

Throughout this series of books, I’m going to show you how science, metaphysics, and religion are irrevocably intertwined; but, first and foremost, we need to learn the basics; and the basics are what this book will show you. The books that follow will each progress to a higher level of understanding and intensity. Sometimes it is easiest to explain these progressions using Bible verses, the words of the Buddha, or the teachings of the Hindus or the Egyptians. Sometimes it is easiest to do this using what we today call myths, or by using fairy tales; and sometimes it is just straightforward. Sometimes, however, this understanding occurs when you’ve had what is labeled a near-death experience, when you have done serious and in-depth meditation, or when you’re just sitting there. You just never know when this realization might hit you.

Where does this realization come from? I’ll show you; but for now, sit back and open your mind—and that does not mean your left or your right brain; it means the mind that is between the two. As the indigenous people from around the world announced when they met in the Verde Valley of Arizona in the early 2010s, The time is now. We must get our ducks in a row, and these books will be the first step to help you do just that.

It gives me great pleasure to hear how much is being done for the deaf-blind. The more I learn of them, the more kindness I find. Why, only a little while ago people thought it was impossible to teach the deaf/blind anything but no sooner was it proved possible that hundreds of kind sympathetic hearts were fired with the desire to help them, and now we see how many of those poor, unfortunate persons are being taught to see the beauty and reality of life. Love always finds a way to an imprisoned Soul, and leads it but into the world of freedom and intelligence. Blindness separates people from things; deafness separates people from people. CHAPTER 1

You Have to Go Back Now

I placed my right foot on the second step of the three-tiered stairs and looked up at the Being standing in front of me. I felt completely discombobulated, as if I had been in a horrible accident—which I had been—and my whole physical body was in fractured disarray. It felt as if all my cells had come apart and were scattered chaotically throughout my force field and out into the heavens.

I looked at the Being again and tried to bring my surroundings into focus. I saw that other Beings stood around the central one, forming a horseshoe shape. All of them shimmered with a filmy opalescent color whose texture looked like a gauzy material that I could poke my finger through. They seemed weightless to me, unlike the way my dense human form felt.

Strangely, the Beings appeared to be in complete Oneness, as if being otherwise was foreign to them. They seemed familiar to me, yet I wasn’t sure who they were or what their role was in this part of my journey. I felt a strong urge to reach out and touch them, or at least be closer to them, but the big one in the middle wouldn’t let me take that one last step. One thing was for sure—there was no mystery as to where I was. I knew that I was home.

I suddenly realized that the Being in the middle was speaking to me in a voice I couldn’t physically hear. She seemed to be downloading voluminous amounts of information into me, so I stood quietly as I absorbed every melodic silent word. After what seemed like a long time, she told me, You have to go back now … your daughters still need you.

I wanted to argue. I didn’t want to go back. I was tired, and I liked this place. It was peaceful here, and the Beings felt kind, unlike the way things felt on Earth. The kindness they emitted was not a thought; it was a sensation that washed through every one of my cells like a warm, white liquid light. At the same time, I felt disappointed because I knew I would have to wait to see them fully again, and because I knew that this time I wouldn’t get to take that last step into their realm of radiant, shimmering cool warmth that felt as if IcyHot had been applied to my insides and was radiating outward.

The thin cord that held this light, floating part of me to my physical body, suddenly snapped like a stretched-out rubber band whose tension has been released. I flew backward through a dark, cool, soundless void of layers upon layers of levels of time, back into my body, as quickly as I had left it.

She’s trying to kill me, I thought. My body shot forward and then back against the seat, with my head bouncing back and forth three times against the headrest. No, no, no, I told myself. Don’t pass out. You might end up in a coma or become a vegetable! I blinked several times to clear my head. Where was I? Where have I been? How did I get back here? I don’t want to be here!

When my body stopped bouncing, I frantically braced myself with my left foot against the floor, my right foot against the wheel well, and my left hand against the console and grabbed onto the above handhold with my right hand to keep from falling down to the left.

The vehicle, which was now lying on the driver’s side after flying up in the air and smashing downward with a horrific thud, continued to hurtle through the snow. I hung there, too stunned to believe what was happening. I saw and heard rocks and beer bottles and cans screech and scrape and crease and rip metal and chrome and plastic from along the side of the car. Dirt and snow flew up in a white-and-black cloud and boiled around us before it settled back down in a dirty whisper.

Suddenly the car slid into a hiccup of a ditch, pivoted in time-lapse motion, and rolled over onto its top. The roof slowly caved in, crushing and splintering the windshield with its weight. I scrunched down lower and lower in my seat and helplessly watched the windshield as it got smaller and smaller, and cowered from the roof as it crept closer and closer.

Suddenly the ripping and crackling and screeching sounds stopped. Now all I could hear were dripping and sizzling sounds that came from the engine compartment. Smoke was pouring out from under the hood, and I could smell the strong odor of the hissing gasoline as it dripped onto the boiling-hot engine.

Momentarily panic-stricken, all I could think was FIRE! I’ve got to get out of here! I’ve got to get out of here! But I couldn’t. I was held taut, hanging upside down by the seat belt. I groped for the clasp and tried to release it. The weight of my body pulling against the strap held the clasp tightly. Frantically I tried the door, but it wouldn’t open. It was welded shut by crookedness—the crookedness of a situation that I wasn’t sure I had agreed on! I looked wide-eyed over at Pam, who hung suspended by her seat belt, her legs bowed around the steering wheel, her hair hanging down and sticking straight out from the roots. Her mouth was puckered like a Cheerio, as if it was about to release a long Ohhh! I caught a mostly silent snort and almost laughed out loud at what I was seeing. Even though the left side of my mouth refused to obey, the right side curved slightly upward in a half grin.

I was about to tell her to turn off the engine when she raised her hands as
