The Curse of the Annunaki
Thomas Arno walked slowly down the long, cavernous entryway of Hansen Hall. He listened as his footsteps echoed along the 30 foot-high ceiling. He bristled as large portraits of past and present Deans looked down at him from enormous frames along the hallway. He had been Dean of the School of Bio-Technology for 30 years and no one had suggested to him that his portrait should join the gallery. Dean Thomas Arno was a failure at the University, but a very successful Dean. It was a success determined by petty politics, average administrative skills and the skillful ability to take credit for the smallest success of others.
Arno walked with a slow measured pace in an effort to control his excitement this particular morning. He was scheduled to meet with the new Chancellor of the University. New at least by University standards.
Lilith Hansen had assumed the role of Chancellor less than a year ago. Her grandfather was the founder of the University and she had shamelessly leveraged his name to assume her new role. She was a woman with an agenda and she knew the clock was ticking. The University was in trouble and its perception in the academic community had hit a slide as advances in science and technology bypassed the aging institution. Lilith was determined to revitalize the reputation of the University and Arno was one of the relentless targets for her ambition.
Arno walked up to the towering mahogany doors at the end of the hallway. The morning sun filled the long hall with warmth. Arno felt nothing as the sunlight filled the air with its magical glow. He stood at the door with smug pride and knocked with a rapid urgency and walked in with a faked breathlessness.
Lilith Hansen looked up from her desk and peered at Arno over her reading glasses. Her head seemed to be propped on a tall, turtleneck sweater and a crisp, short jacket that matched her knee length skirt. Her gray roots peaked through her dark black hair where she parted it on one side. She stared at Arno without expression and wondered why this man had burst into her office. Arno shook his head in a practiced way as he approached her desk at the end of the enormous, mahogany paneled office.
"We have it! We have it! We finally have it! Arno sputtered as he sank into the small leather chair in front of her massive desk.
Lilith did not move as Arno spoke.
I’m so glad, Doctor Arno.
She paused again for effect. You are, of course, going to tell me what ‘we’ have?
The breakthrough! The ‘news’ you’ve been looking for. This time I think we’ve really done it.
Lilith methodically pulled her reading glasses down from her long, aquiline nose and put some papers aside. She folded her hands on her desk and studied Arno. He had been the first person in her office on her first day as Chancellor talking about his vision for the University, his contributions to the world of bio-tech and the key role he would play in her rapid success. After a year, he had accomplished nothing. Lilith now thought of him as a glad-handing fraud who promised much and delivered little.
Arno sputtered again as he spoke. The conference at the end of this month? The one you’re hosting! We have the breakthrough that will bring great news to the University.
"You will at some point in this conversation tell me
