I dedicate this book to a man who helped me at a time when I was at my lowest. He never deserted me. He stood by me with patience and love, even when I gave him reason not to. He encouraged me to take a leap of faith with him and this book. Thank you, darling.
CHAPTER 1
36515.pngThe metal door of the holding room creaks as the deputy opens it, revealing a large room that has only one window on the north wall. The late-evening sun shines through, causing an eerie shadow to fall against the opposite wall. The walls are a pale yellow and are peeling to reveal the previous color of blue, which covers a shade of brown. Along another wall are several cots with three-inch-thick mattresses with the cotton hanging out. The opposite wall holds a metal bench and a stainless steel commode and sink combo. There is no privacy whatsoever. Samantha stands in the doorway, peering inside and afraid to enter what will be her accommodations for the night.
I hate to place you in here, but it’s the only place I have for you. We sure can’t put you in a cell with the rest of the prisoners, now, can we?
the deputy tells her as he motions for her to enter. Samantha sadly walks into the room, knowing she has no other choice. The echo of the door slamming behind her is a rude reminder to her that there is no escaping.
The window in the door opens. Sally, the lady who usually fixes meals, is not here this time of night. I’ll run out and grab you something to eat. Anything special you want?
the deputy asks with a smile. Samantha shakes her head no, and the window shuts. She desperately wants a cigarette, but she knows there’s no point in asking.
Samantha looks around the cell, not sure whether she wants to touch anything. What creatures were here before her? she thinks. What creatures are here now? She hears a scratching sound in the corner. There is no way I can sleep here,
she mumbles to herself. But it has been a long, sleepless twenty-four hours, and even the dirty, worn-out bare mattress looks good. She sits down on the cold metal bench and places her face in her hands. The tears begin to fall. She thinks about the events that led to her current situation.
CHAPTER 2
36515.pngIt is a chilly April day. In the back seat of the small car sits Samantha Reed. She is on her way back from a conference with her principal and her mother. Once again she’s suspended from school; this time it is for skipping classes and leaving school grounds. Her long, stringy blonde hair hangs down in front of her face. She is a naive, rebellious sixteen-year-old who thinks no one should tell her what to do. Both her parents are quite along in years, which leads people to think they
