OLD SCHOOL MENTALITY
IN A BIG CITY
Summer of 1979 one of the few beautiful days we get up north in Michigan, we would enjoy every warm sunny day we received because summers were very short, just purchased a new 1979 Pontiac Grand Prix, beautiful deep red burgundy color with shinny chrome wheels, the kids loved the car as much as I did and we were going on vacation in just another month or so to visit with the grandmother in Florida, school would be out for the summer in another few weeks, and I needed to keep the kids active during the summer.
It was just after 2:45 got my babies in the car and was on our way home just three short blocks to the house, we were approaching our neighborhood store on the corner of east Barrett and John R, all of a sudden we heard three gun shots going off just to my left very loud, I reached for my children concerned for their safety, just than two more shots broke the silence of the afternoon, as I looked back up I could see three young thugs fighting with this man calling him some very ugly names and punching at him, as a few more shots shattered the window of a the store, these three mongrel looking punks dressed like they never cleaned themselves started running as fast as they can from the man with a similar car as mine, however his wheels were dark factory wheels I looked right at him as he grabbed some woman that appeared to be riding with him, shaking her like a rag doll, he had very dark long hair with a beard and mustache, instantly I pulled over down the street, squad cars blaring, lights flashing must have been at least 9 cars according to my son’s, one of the officers looked at me acting like he was going to stop his car but couldn’t because of other squad cars behind him, he was a very fat faced looking officer kind of mean looking, like he just got out of the swamp and had no luck fishing that day, so as the three other cars passed I took my children home to safety and a controlled environment thank God for that, their mother asked why the children were so scared and excited at this time, and did it have something to do with all the sirens and squad cars racing down the street, my answer was yes as my baby girl reached for me in comfort, mom took the boys as we stood in silence, I had tears in my eyes and my baby daughter wiped them away and whispered I love you daddy, I drifted back in time to Viet Nam remembering all the small children our Marine Corps Unit the 7th engineers Battalion 1st Marine Division rendered help to, and these babies that were left behind in villages, no parents they were killed right in front of the children by the Viet Kong by their own people, we would feed them and house them, until the southern Viet Nam military could find homes for them or other family members, it was horrific for these children not knowing what their future would be, I couldn’t help but fall in love with these babies and pray for them even to this day.
Looking back into my little girls big beautiful blue eyes I realized just how blessed we truly are here in America, I squeezed her a little tight and kissed her soft little cheek, there is nothing more precious than when your child put’s their arms around your neck, and whispers the words I love you, I was very proud to protect my children, and just as proud to serve my country, earning 11 medals including the cross of gallantry, not to mention a few other’s.
We were finally settled down enough to enjoy some diner, I put together some fried chicken, corn on the cob and a real nice salad, and a sweet custard pie for after diner, allowed the children to view another hour of television, than off to bed and some sweet comfortable blessed sleep, I taught all three of them how to pray and I would pray over my children every day and every evening, even as I peeked in on them after they had fallen asleep.
I never knew just how deep a father’s love runs for his children until I was blessed with my own, my stepdad really didn’t know how to be a real dad, but he was a very good provider, taught me how to drive at an early age and this helped save my life on more than one occasion in my mid-teens. The news was coming on at ten o’clock, suddenly the incident in our neighborhood was blasted across our TV screen, the city just outside of Detroit, was turned into a war zone according to the news, this all took place on the corner of John R and east Barrett, at the local neighborhood store, report has it as a tall Arab looking man with long curly black hair and a beard with a thick mustache, was in an altercation with his woman slender dark completion with long dark black hair, and three men came out of the back of the store and proceeded to engage the Arab man in the altercation. According to the report these three mongrel looking persons were younger teens and one of them had a knife and started to use it on the Arab man, at this point a weapon was produced and shots rang out into this ordinarily quiet neighborhood.
The three mongrel looking teens took off running as shots rang out in their direction, and several more shots rang out as the woman ran for the store entrance, one bullet hitting the glass window of the store.
According to the news the man took his vehicle and ran right out into the busy intersection in front of the store just prior to the police arriving, the woman was questioned and denied knowing the Arab looking man, however she did give a vague description of his car, it was a new car dark red in color with dark wheels and a dent in the driver’s side door from the man kicking at the woman and hitting the door according to the report.
The news made a statement that if anyone had any information about this incident can they please call the News station and give a detailed report, no questions asked, the very next day the report in the newspaper read, a man got into an altercation at a local store in Michigan, shooting at a woman as well as three teens with intent to do great bodily harm less then murder, how the hell could this
