    CHAPTER ONE

    Mya and Evan

Mya has always been terrified of insects and animals of all kinds, but there was one she’s always been fascinated by. The most venomous spider in North America. It’s practically a Bad Ass Boss Bitch if you asked her. If only she had the back bone to be as bad and as confident as the dominating, Black Widow. Deep inside she felt she could be a little more demanding, but on the exterior Mya was a little clumsy girl who everyone felt they could just walk all over. She never said no or did what she wanted to do, and Lance was the reason.

If Mya even thought about going against him that would probably be the end of her. There would probably be no chance that she would find her inner dominance. Mya also found it fascinating that the Black Widow devours her mate after having her way with him. Kind of kinky don’t you think? God knows she wanted to show Lance a thing or two, but with her 5ft 130lbs vs. his 6ft 2in 180lbs frame; Mya would be the one devoured. Hell he’d probably butcher her with her own knife and bury her in her own backyard.

Mya often wondered what she did to deserve such a scum bag. Maybe that was her comeuppance for moving in with the first guy she met fresh out of high school, and straight through college. What the heck was I thinking?! There’s no way I’d let my kid do such a thing. Mya guessed that was what her grandma meant when she said in her southern tone, Them boys gonna make you cry! Well…she got that right! Mya had wished her grandma would have been a little more specific, instead of being so mysterious. Like really! What’s with older people warning you, but never tell you why or how? Mya was all for life lessons, but a little more info would’ve been nice. "Thanks Gigi!" She shouted in her head up to the heavens.

After a short time with Lance. Mya got the courage to see a therapist. She was dealing with so much, and needed someone to talk to. It’s not like she really helped all that much. She actually kind of made Mya feel worse about everything. Every session it was… How does that make you feel? or You need meds. Ugh! Being there made Mya want to claw her eyes out of their sockets. Speaking of Dr. Rivera, she had a session with her.

…I felt like I needed to leave. Lance had become violent and controlling. I just felt trapped.

How did that make you feel?

Horrible of course; terrified that he might hurt me or worse. Now I’m constantly thinking something will happen to me.

    So you’re feeling anxious?

    I guess so…

I want to prescribe you something for you anxiety. Here is a prescription, and I’ll see you back next month.

Anxiety meds really! I have now joined the club with the introverts and the paranoid, Mya thought to myself. Ugh! Great… could things get any worse? She had already talked to her family physician, Dr. Kenly, once before about this. He wanted to prescribe her meds too, but she refused. Dr. Rivera suggested this multiple times as well, but Mya rejected her also, until now. Her anxiety had gotten worse so she gave it a shot.

On the way home Mya swung by the pharmacy. She came out and sat in the car reading the directions and side effects. May cause drowsiness and nausea, with and annoyance printed on her face she stopped reading. Oh great, just fan-fuckng-tastic! Just what I needed on top of everything else, she thought sarcastically.

She cranked the car and drove off. FOR GOD’S SAKE! A frantic Mya almost jumped out of her skin as a car pulled out in front of her. She pulled over, and cursed under muffled breath. Mya sat, car in park until she stopped shaking and calmed down. Those meds were starting to look like candy at that point. It wasn’t her day at all, nothing was going right.

Mya gathered her wits and eased back onto the highway driving the speed of an elderly woman. Come on Mya get it together, you’re so paranoid, she coaxed firmly to myself. Finally making it home, she tossed her tired body in the couch and sat for a while. The house was so quiet. It had no life. These walls used to be filled with love and happiness until her grandparents passed away not long after one another. They left her the house and Mya had been on her own for about a year.

Mya worked at a local retail store part time. She didn’t have many bills to pay so one would say she had it made, but that was far from the truth. Mya felt empty, like she was missing something. God only knew what that could be. It couldn’t have been love, seeing as she’d sworn off of that a while ago. Maybe she needed a new job, something with more excitement. Mya really didn’t have many friends. There was Kendra. She’d been her bestie for practically ever, but she didn’t live in Georgia anymore. There was Callie… but she hasn’t seen her since college. Word was she dropped out because she met this guy in a band, and was following him on tour. I’d always wondered where she disappeared. Hmmm…there was Christina, or at least there would’ve been Christina if she didn’t think she was the hottest thing since Watchflix. Mya and Callie were sick of her I’m so perfect attitude, so they just kept their distance.

At times she did wonder though. Was I smart enough? Was I pretty enough? Mya walked over to the mirror and stared at her appearance. She modeled a high low summer dress and a pair of flip flops to match. Her long dark hair dangled in her face and straddled her shoulders. Her face was pretty natural and not smeared in makeup. OK, ENOUGH OF THAT! Mya yelled at to herself. She never gave into insecurities before, so she wouldn’t start now.

Mya went back to the sofa and retrieved the bag containing the pills. Removing the bottle she read, Take with food. She went to the kitchen and made a salad, when she finished it was dark out. Mya took a deep breath, opened the bottle, poured the pill into the cap, and took one. She drowned it with water and swallowed.

After tidying up a bit Mya felt a little tired, so she went upstairs and laid down for a while. In no time at all she was asleep. When Mya had awakened, she was still in her clothes. She went to the bathroom to change but felt dizzy, like she was a few sheets to the wind. Maybe it was the salad. Those cucumbers were kind of iffy. After changing Mya fell back into bed, and all was silent.

Hours had passed. The room was bright. The sun was peeking through the blinds. Mya struggled to open her eyes and looked at the clock. Nine o’clock…NINE O’CLOCK! Oh my gosh! She was so late for work. Hurriedly she got dressed and dashed out of the door.

    Mya you’re here.

Yes, sorry I’m late, I felt terrible last night and must have forgotten to set my alarm.

You’re here now. Just don’t let it happen again.

    Yes Mrs. Johansen.

The day seemed to creep by, and Mya was still feeling nauseous and really tired.

    Miss… excuse me… hello!

She jumped up, Yes, how my I help you?

I’ve been waiting to check out.

Stunned by the most gorgeous man staring at her. She straightened up and cleared her throat, Sorry, $10.75 sir.

    Thanks.

Thank you, come again. Come again? She thought to herself. That was so cheesy. He must’ve thought she was some dorky ass slacker. Ugh! Damn it man!

    Mya?

    Yes Mrs. Johansen?

You look terrible dear, why don’t you go home early.

Thank you. See you next week.

    My pleasure.

Mrs. Johansen was such a wonderful lady, but she could be just as fiery when someone crosses her. Mya managed to stay in her good graces over the years. She gave her a job when she was on her own. Mrs. Johansen looked out for her in the work force as much as she possibly could. Mya finished college, but after losing her grandparents she never pursued a career. Mrs. Johansen would never admit it, but she was just trying to keep an eye on Mya.

Buzzzzzzzzzz… half-awake Mya reached over to the nightstand and hit the snooze button on the alarm. All she needed was five more minutes before waking up to the same ole routine. She’d still been feeling weird lately, but decided to get back to her daily schedule. Every morning was the same. Mya would get up, brush her teeth, and get dressed for a morning run when she was off. Stepping outside to the moist air, owls wooing, and the beautiful fairytale shade of blue sky was calming.

Mya started down the block, passing a few houses along the way. Usually she would just continue on but something was different. There used to be a For Sale sign in the McAllister’s yard, but today it was gone. There was also a moving van in the driveway. She slowed down a bit, much less than jogging. Gawking, she wanted to see who owned the house now. Maybe a nice happily married couple or something. Just as she decided to continue on, Mya came to a complete stop. Standing on the steps dressed in nothing but sweatpants was the most handsome man she had ever seen in her entire life. That brother was fine; a perfectly sculpted masterpiece.

Wait a minute! I knew that guy. The eye catching masterpiece was in the store yesterday. This gorgeous guy saw her when she was completely out of it. Drum roll please… and the award goes to Mya McAvoy for making a complete fool of herself in the presence of that sexy hunk of a man. Way to go, she beat herself up over and over. Shit, there goes Mrs. Tilly! If Mya didn’t get a move on she would talk her to death. Ugh! Too late.

    Hi Mya.

Hello, Mrs. Tilly how are you?

I’m fine dear, just out for a stroll. I have to make a quick run into town, so I’m on my way back in.

Oh ok, well don’t let me keep you.

    Talk to you later dear.

See ya. Wow thank God, Mya was not in the mood for any of her gossip today. She turned her attention back to admire that guy. He was so hot.

A cool breeze brought her back to reality. Mya was kind of relieved. She didn’t want him to catch her lusting over him. Besides, watching him unload that truck was kind of turning her on. While Mya was gawking her didn’t see a wife or kids, they must have been inside. She figured she had better get moving before they or anyone else saw her drooling over the new neighbor. The rest of the day, Mya found herself contemplating him. Picking up the phone, she had to call her bestie and tell her about this!

    Hello…

Hey Kendra, you’ll never guess what I saw today.

    What?

I saw the MOST delicious looking eye candy today. Kendra, he was tall, at least 6ft. He had soft curly hair and a delicious caramel skin tone!

Seriously Mya? Don’t most of the guys you’re attracted to have those same features?

Maybe… but Kendra I’m telling you this one is different. He has a strong jaw line like Rick Fox and a body like the Wolverine. He must work out a lot. His lips were perfect; insanely kissable.

Wow, were you really that close to notice all of that?

No! She laughed. Well wait… yeah, I was. He came to the store yesterday when I was working, but this morning he was across the street. I could just sense this this is my guy. My own personal brand of tall, sexy, and SCRUMPTIOUS!

Well, I say you should introduce yourself to your future hubby, Kendra teased.

Oh man, I think I’m in love with a stranger…

The next morning was quite the same, but when Mya went back by something had changed. The van was gone and replace with a shiny, sleek, black SUV. After a moment she saw the door open and he was standing there. He was standing there in nothing but blue silky boxers. He started to get the paper, and Mya couldn’t help but stare at him. Suddenly, he looked up as if he felt he was being watched.

Mya tried to move, but was frozen still as if cement had been poured into her shoes. He looked at her and said, Hello, it’s pretty nice out today.

Mya couldn’t utter a word. He stepped off the porch and walked down the driveway in his blue boxers and silver chain. He walked over to her and took note that she was checking him out.

    What’s your name?

M-Mya! she squeaked. Shit! Come on Mya get it together! She silently scolded herself.

That’s a beautiful name for a beautiful lady.

Blushing, Mya looked down and said, Thank you, and yours?

Evan, he replied with a brightening smile, Evan Lee Kasey.

Lee? That’s my middle name too. She expressed surprise.

    Really?! What a coincidence.

He would definitely look good in a gum or toothpaste commercial. His smoldering good looks were everything. The way he smiled and spoke with confidence was like he was teasing her purposely. It made her more taken with him but she tried not to show it. It was kind of impossible though. On the lickable scale from 1-10, he was off the charts. Come on Mya, focus! She continued to fight with herself.

I remember you from the store yesterday, or am I mistaken?

Yep, that was me… totally out of it. Mya replied looking away in embarrassment.

    Do you live around here?

Yeah, in the brick house with white siding, and black shutters. She pointed. I was just out for a run, and something distracted me. Mya found herself eyeing the imprint underneath the silky fabric of his boxers. Damn! Her inner self shouted. As if he could hear her she hurriedly looked away. Down girl… she looked back into his eyes.

They both laughed and he said, Oh, I’m sorry. Would you like to come inside and look around while I put on something more appropriate? I forgot I was underdressed, he licked his lips.

Mya hesitated and said, No thanks I should get back to jogging.

Are you sure? It’s kind of pointless to run right now, because you don’t have any water.

    Excuse me?

"Water. You need to stay hydrated while running; especially, if you’re going for more than thirty minutes. Or I could join you, just to make sure you don’t pass
