ED, PRIVATE EYE IN THE 22ND CENTURY
A S CATHY AND Ed were boarding their cruise ship at the Portland Space Center, Cathy said, Hurry up Ed. It is time to board and find our cabin.
Yes dear, replied Ed.
I’m not as young as I use to be."
I can’t wait to see our grandson, Eddy,
Cathy said. Hard to believe he is getting his detective badge. He has worked so hard for it. Just think, one of the first detective on the Mars colony, Vega.
The cruise ship started on the four solar cycles trip to Mars.
On the first solar day, Ed and Cathy were sitting at a table having breakfast. A couple stopped by their table, Aren’t you Ed Bowers the private eye?
I was. I mean I am, Ed Bowers, the former private investigator. I gave it up a few years ago to spend my time making this young lady, happy my wife, Cathy Bowers.
Cathy chuckled, Yes, he is my hero and a great husband.
I am Marion Martin and this is my lovely wife Susan. May we share your table?
Sure, come join us.
Welcomed Ed.
Marion and Susan sat down on the opposite end of the small table. Marion asked, Are you guys on vacation?
Cathy spoke up, No, we are on our way to Vega colony to see our grandson receive his detective badge.
Oh, that’s nice,
remarked Marion. We are going to Solar Crater to sight see."
Maybe we should check that out while we are there,
Ed looked at Cathy.
Would it be too personal if you told me about some of your cases. I have heard about some of your exploits as a PI.
Marion said with interest.
Ed replied, No not at all.
Cathy jumped in, So Sue would you like to go shopping? It will be a while. Ed loves to talk.
Susan leaned over and kissed Marion on the cheek, See you later, Have fun.
Don’t bore him dear.
Cathy said as she kissed Ed on his cheek.
Ed started with his first case …….
It was July 25th 2110, the hottest day of the summer. Standing outside, you could fry an egg on the hood of your vehicle. It was around ten o’clock in the morning. Ed Bowers was sitting in his air-conditioned office talking to his secretary, Cathy Hastings. Looking out the fifth story window, Ed realized that the traffic was slower than usual, Not a lot of traffic at this time a day. It’s like everyone went to the beach.
Cathy was discussing the bookkeeping with Ed. The funds were low, making it difficult to pay their monthly expenses. Cathy had just finished writing out the checks and was sending out their monthly statements to previous clients. She said The bank account was near defunct and the old coffee pot needs to be replaced. If you don’t get some new clients soon, we will both be out looking for a new job.
Ed replied in alarm, I love that old coffee pot. I won it at the fair ten years ago.
He felt sad that he may have to buy a new coffee pot. I know, it’s been slow this time of year. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of crime or missing items. It’s almost as if the crooks are a vacation.
Just then the visual satellite communication phone (ViSComP) signaled, Incoming call,
Cathy stood up from the chair near Ed’s desk, and walked into her office. Ed noticed how nice Cathy looked in her blue summer dress. The dress swayed from side to side as she walked. He noted how the sunlight hit her short red hair. Her green eyes sparkled as she turned and looked back at him. She reached her desk and answered the ViSComP. Hello, Ed’s Private Investigation Service. Cathy speaking. May I help you?
A young woman answered, Yes, my name is Tina Neal. I need a private investigator’s help to find a rare missing book. Is Mr. Bowers in?
Why yes, he is.
Cathy replied.
May I talk to him, please?
Tina asked.
Please hold, while I get him for you,
Cathy put the ViSComP on hold and turned to Ed. There is a Miss Tina Neal on the phone. She said, she needs to talk to you about a lost book.
Ed exclaimed, A lost book! What am I, a librarian? Is it an overdue book?
Ed chuckled.
Cathy reminded him that they needed the work. Ed nodded his head in agreement and turned on his video phone.
Hello, this is Ed Bowers. How may I help you?
I need to find a rare book I lost,
replied Tina.
You say you are looking for a missing book? Can you tell me more about this book?
It is a very special and rare book, I need to find it fast,
said Tina in frustration.
Would you like to come over to the office? We can discuss the matter in more detail.
Ed asked, a bit frustrated.
Yes, I would. Is this afternoon okay with you? Around two o’clock?
Ed, paused as if he was checking his calendar, Yes, two o’clock would be fine. I can rearrange my schedule for that time. Good-bye, Miss Neal. See you at two.
Ed turned off his ViSComP and paged Cathy to come back into his office. Put in the schedule book that I have a meeting with Miss Neal at two o’clock today.
Okay
said Cathy. She went back to her desk to finish up the paperwork that needed to be done for the day.
Ed leaned back in his chair and threw a paper airplane across the room. He frowned, and remembered he needed to do something this morning. But what was it?
Cathy stuck her head in the door and said, "You were going over to Ted’s Bar and Grill to pick up
