CHAPTER 1
M RS. SIOBHAN DYSON had a three-bedroom home that sat on the corner of Tremont next to a deserted field where some of the older ladies came to grow their vegetables. Pharaoh, her eldest son, had just come back from the pen. He had the house quiet, but full of energy, knowing her baby was back, Siobhan felt that things, for now, will start to fall in place. Siobhan’s youngest angel of the bunch, Jessie, was a 19-year-old brown skin, foul-mouthed lil’ lady who took no shit. She was always eager to get into trouble at the drop of a hat and right on queue.
Pharaoh, why the hell you got Momma keys?
Yelled Jess. Mined yours, I got to make a run, and if you wake Momma, I swear you are going to catch hell,
stated Pharaoh. Jess had been fucking with him all morning
Fuck You Pharaoh. I bet if I talk loud enough, I’ll get what I want, and you know momma don’t want you hanging out yet, Haughville hasn’t been the same since you left.
But, you can pay me that will keep my mouth shut!!"
At that moment, he knew lil’ sis had developed an extortion game…
Jess was a little younger than Pharaoh and took after his smart mouth and hustle. He kept her close; boys always seemed to flock around when she batted her brown eyes in their direction. With a hesitant look and smile, Pharaoh yells down the hall.
At the same time, without hesitation and according to Pharaoh’s plan, Siobhan swings open the bedroom door as he’s yelling,
"I’m broke; all I got is what I got out with on my release. Siobhan appears wearing her half-buttoned up Levis and her favorite slippers that were heard scraping across the floor while wiping the sleep out the corner of her eyes.
Pissed, she says, "Now didn’t I tell you, loud-mouthed kids, not to disturb me until I was ready to get up, shit!!? Wheel of Fortune ain’t even on yet!
Jessie went into the kitchen to grab her usual Pepsi, trying to avoid the verbal assault brewing.
So, what are you two arguing about now?
Siobhan muttered.
Mrs. Dyson had been in a few beauty contests in her younger days and won every single one. She also won the battle that was Jayson Dyson. She had heard so much about this young man who attended Washington High
School, a few blocks away from 10th, where she resided now. Jayson was an athlete and a heartbreaker; everyone wanted him. What she quickly realized is that Jayson had eyes for her. Siobhan had been the new face in school, and Jayson knew she was better than gold, getting to her first before the neighborhood usual’s tried, was the key. Siobhan was a Dominican who had not been touched and was as pure as the raw he would eventually flood the city in. In Jayson’s mind, Siobhan was his, and he was hers, he was determined to make that a reality.
Even in her more graceful years, you couldn’t tell Siobhan was 55. She was appealing to any eye, male or female; these days, she didn’t mind the attention from either. Siobhan kept herself fit and curvy over the years by visiting the YMCA on 16th with the other neighborhood ladies. Every part of her body was set up like a 22-year-old with a fresh cherry to burst. She stood 5 feet 7 inches 122 pounds, skin the same color as a caramel chew, and the curves of a plump peach to show off. She was full of aggression and knowledge; she was a reason to pay attention and watch. According to her, the kids picked up the aggressive hustle from her genes. Jayson was the glue that had held the group together; he possessed finesse, the murder game, and methodical patience she didn’t own.
Siobhan needlessly asks, Son, where are you trying to sneak off in my car?
said in her raspy Dominican accent… Yo, sister loud ass mouth ain’t have to tell me nothing. I know you, and I know you aren’t about to sit still. After all, you are your father’s child. With emotions in her eyes. Siobhan started to plead,
You already sat down three years. I just need you to be careful. Can nobody give you that time back, and I damn sure don’t need you to lose anymore. These boys now don’t move like you all used to when you daddy and Munch were out here.
These younger boys pull first and ask questions later on; that’s
