The Myth of Addictions
Dedication
I would like to dedicate this book to the people who spent around 2 years of counselling even longer. It is very hard to open up especial in the front of strangers. And counselling can be boring and takes long time. To open up is time consuming. This manual can also, be used by anyone who wants to deal with his/her addictions. This Manual provides a good basis of development and will be of help for futures years.
Introduction Poker Machines and Addictions
My intention is to address this book to people who have an addiction to poker machines, but it also can be used for any addiction including the narcotics (heroin, morphine etc.), alcohol and any addiction in general. My addiction is cigarettes and poker machines, addictions which I have not touch for years. I find the addiction of poker machines to be one of the worst addiction since you are not getting anything in return. You might as well leave the money at the door and go.
I have been to courses, read books, been counselled and counselled myself. With this experience, I would like to help people as much as possible.
The term addiction has a connotation of being bed, that something bad has happened. A more appropriate term is dependency, something you can deal with. Some people will use the terminology addiction, others hobby. For this manual, we will use dependency.
A second topic I would like to cover is that dependencies are bad. This is a totally flawed. They are given to you by the mind, there is something inside you that needs full filing. The mind needs it. So, it cannot be bad. Another point, any psychological problem is an opportunity to grow. So, having a dependency is not bad. I just do not want you to hurt yourself because of addictions.
Trying to get rid of the psychological problem, might be too hard and become an exercise in self-delusion. And the best thing is to control the addiction and not let yourself allow the dependency to overcome you.
Also, would like to tell you that it is best to have 3 dependencies not 1, because it reaches the end and will be very hard to get up. Most of the people have one which is not very good.
The only way to get rid of addiction is to fall in love. Now since this is so hard to do especially when you are in your thirties and forties the best solutions are to control your addictions. This is the myth of addictions, the only thing to do is to control your addictions and pick up some which are healthy.
A lot of people have dependencies out of control. They lose their houses, they cannot provide for the family, they live from pay to pay. Instead of looking at the situation as an opportunity to grow, expand, and be more, they look and see a sign of weakness. This is not a sign of weakness.
So, we are looking for healthy dependencies to replace the not so healthy ones. Things like playing an instrument (you can do that at any age), going to Gym and keeping fit, writing books etc. these are healthy dependencies. Unhealthy ones must go e.g.: poker machines, heroin, cocaine, amphetamines etc.
Some of the hardest to give up dependency is Ice or methamphetamines, you get a psychological dependency as well as physical addiction (chemical). So there are easier and harder addictions to give up. A very important factor is your ability to find and have a friend. A person who you are very close to and you can open as much as you wish with no problems. This one friend will make a difference in your life. He will help you when you need help he will understand you when you need understanding and likewise you will do the same thing for him. You might find him in the support group where this book will be very good, you might find him in places you do not expect. But if you keep your eye open and do not give up you will find him or her.
One more important point is that most addiction in use today, is the dependencies of not being able to budget (at least in Australia). You get paid on a salary day and by the time the next payment comes you do not have any
