71133.pngCHAPTER ONE
T he town was abuzz about the teenager’s death at the cliff. Everyone was talking about who could have done such a terrible thing to a sweet girl like Jackie.
Everyone in town knew her at the eatery Subway. She was always smiling,
Stephanie said as she sat in the Mayor’s office talking on the phone to a friend of hers. She hung up quickly because she saw her boss coming. In walks Mayor Hutchinson huffing and puffing wiping his forehead saying, It is too hot outside. I can hardly breathe!
It ain’t the weather Jim,
stated Stef who began typing real fast as if she had been laboring away at her work.
You been talking to the wife again. Haven’t you?
he asked with a growl. Stef rolled her eyes at him continuing to type.
Dang-burn-it! You all are in cahoots! I am not going to stay on that diet and you know it. I’m starving! SOOO I’ve gained a few pounds,
he admitted and rubbed his fat belly that was hanging over his trousers. Then he sat down behind his desk pouting.
Starving?
Stef shook her head. Now Jim I saw that piece of chocolate cake you had hid in your desk. Brenda would have a fit, if she knew! She is a good woman and needs you to be able to BREATHE. Do it for her!
She stared at him.
Alright! You are right. She is right! I will try harder … but you got to help me find something that taste good. Please!
he was whining and moaning.
Just the thought of low-calorie bland food was making him frown like he was sick.
Okay! Okay! I’ll teach Brenda how to make scrumptious low-fat low-calorie cakes. Happy now?
Stephanie watched his frown turn into a wide grin.
Would you? Really?
and he let out a sigh of relief.
On one condition,
she said adjusting her eyeglasses.
What?
he asked. Jim was bracing for Stef’s response.
That you walk a mile with your wife every day,
she nodded her head.
He laughed, Have you shared that with my wife?
He thought he had one up on her this time.
Of course, I have. We have talked about it for sometime now. Both she and I are afraid you are going to have a heart attack and both of us don’t want that. She’ll walk. I will, too!
She walked to the restroom door, and glared back at him and added, And we both don’t want me to do that, do we?
She went on into the bathroom quickly because she did not want to see the look on his face. She would not be able to contain her laughter.
Stef had taken care of him for so long and soon he would be retiring. She was going to get him in better physical shape, so he and Brenda could go on some trips. Those trips would be sight-seeing tours requiring plenty of walking.
Her mind was made up that she and Brenda would plan out the mayor’s daily routine tomorrow as planned. Yep! Her today’s plan had worked. All she had wanted was for him to commit TODAY, and he had.
She had his commitment and she had it recorded. It was on the tape recorder in her desk drawer. Boy would she play it back, if he messed up.
That’s the only way to get him to do anything,
she said to herself. Nothing like blackmailing him,
and she chuckled.
Lacey had walked into her office and heard Mama Stef laughing to herself. Care to share? I know this one is a doozie. I see it on your face,
Lacey stated as fact.
I’ll tell you later. Too many ears listening right now,
and Stef winked. The girl knew her well.
Where are my babies?
Mama Stef knew, but she had to divert Lacey.
At school and this kindergarten teacher is grating on Everest’s nerves already,
Lacey stated and screwed up her upper lip. Just like she did when she was a wee little tot and Stephanie had took her in to raise.
You mean she is getting more hugs and kisses than his Mama?
Stephanie leaned her head to one side and stared into Lacey’s eyes.
Yeah … something like that. I miss him so much, and Elizabeth pays me no mind either. She’s always at ballet or at her grandma Rimes ’s house these days,
she looked at the town map hanging on the Mayor’s office wall.
Don’t even think it! Travis would have a fit. He loves you being at home and no way will he be happy if he think you want to go back on the police force,
Mama Stef was frantic.
Stef added and got Lacey’s attention, You need a little sister for Everest. Now, do your job!
Lacey was pacing with her arms folded across her chest.
Hmm you may have something there. I admit I am bored stiffless!
she never cursed in front of Mama Stef or she would get swatted.
Yeah … that is a great idea!
and a smile came across Lacey’s face from ear to ear.
It scared Stef, You cannot kill our Sheriff. Now Lacey, the town needs him!
and she laughed.
CRAZY … YES!
Lacey ran and hugged her. I promise, I won’t. I was so depressed when I came in here, and as always you have cheered me right up, and headed me down a good path.
She kissed Stef’s cheek and ran out the door waving.
Stef was at the door, Tell your husband I am available to baby-sit anytime,
and she was grinning.
Jim stuck his head out of his office, I heard that and don’t think I won’t use it as blackmail, if my sheriff starts starts staggering in all tuckered out.
Stephanie was not phased. The mayor frowned.
You told Travis he is going to be a new father, didn’t you?
Jim stated and his eyes got big.
Stef didn’t answer, but sat down humming a cradle lullaby, I just told him that Lacey may have him a surprise tonight! He’s no fool. He knows it isn’t a chocolate cake,
and she grinned at the torture she saw on Jim’s face.
Just the mention of cake made him slam his office door and retreat mumbling.
Stephanie sat down smiling at her desk saying, Maybe now I can get some work done.
At peace with herself because she had solved her immediate world’s problems.
She hummed the same lullaby Rock-a-bye Baby in the Tree Top.
As the mayor sat at his desk, covering his ears and dreaming of a slice of chocolate cake.
Lacey drove by the police station to ask Marcus Crocker the police chief, if there had been any leads on the teenager’s death.
She knew Travis would not tell her anything, and Marcus would. She had worked at that precinct long before Travis had come to town and ravished her, and swept her off her feet.
Travis saw Lacey from his office window at the sheriff department that was adjacent to the police station. He grimaced. He had his hands full with this homicide investigation. What was his wife up to now?
He closed the folder and marched over to Marcus’s office and confronted her.
May I ask what you are doing here?
Travis looked from Lacey to Marcus. He was so afraid since Everest was now in school that Lacey would ask for her old job back. It terrified him and he was ready to butt heads.
Lacey turned and smiled licking her lips and wiggling a new pair of designer jeans, and sporting a ’new hairdo’. She had lipstick on, and his pressure was rising.
I was looking for you WP, and there you are,
she said walking toward him. She never said Woodpecker in public.
He was backing up and Marcus was laughing. Travis had her by her arm walking fast to his Jeep steering her with ease. He shouted to his right hand man, I’m gone for the day.
Now, Honey! You can take your time. We have two whole hours before Everest will be out of school,
she was purring.
Travis was staring at the road, Call Mama Stef and tell her it is an emergency, and that she needs to pick up the kids and stay the night,
he stated firmly with his jaw twitching.
She pursed her lips and whispered, I already did when I left the beauty parlor, but you haven’t even said how you like my new hairdo?
She fluffed her hair causing her left nipple to rest on his right arm.
Get on the other side of this vehicle before I wreck this thing!
Travis was gritting his teeth and managing to wound through the traffic methodically.
She immediately slid away from him and patted herself, But I want you to wreck this thing, and wreck it now!
Lacey knew they were at their destination, and gazed into his eyes.
Travis said, Do you think you can wait until I walk through that lobby? I am not the Sheriff of this town, and I may get arrested.
He was not going to make it much longer with her leg coming up to his crotch. Then she turned and strutted into the motel with him gawking, and trying to compose himself.
He saw a paper machine outside and purchased a newspaper and held it strategically in front of himself as he walked in.
She was signing them in, and using her Mastercard that he had given to her for only EXTREME emergencies.
Lacey leaned over the register desk bending one knee letting her high heel rise up his leg.
He walked to the elevator to wait and watch. He watched as she swayed to him, and they got in. The outside world was no more. It was only two people in their world. Him and her, and no one else mattered.
She immediately said, Don’t touch! The cameras are recording,
and they stood staring in a locked gaze at one another. Like two prized roosters circling and sizing each other up for the kill or to see who would weaken first.
The bedroom door opened and it was on like Donkey Kong. He was grabbing her and molding her to him. She was sucking on his tongue trying to get his shirt off. He was swiftly removing her sweater over the newly arranged curls that smelled of perfumed nectar.
Ciara was sprayed everywhere her pulse points were, and he was going from one to the other smelling and licking each one bringing her to a fevered pitch.
Finally they were naked and all was solved. Their coupling was electric, and it only took a few strokes to take them over quickly. Both exhaled with the release complete, and held on for the continuous aftershocks.
Travis fell back beside Lacey on the bed and said, I forgot to tell you …. you … how damn hot you looked … wife of mine.
It’s okay. I know how damn good you looked to me in that uniform. I forgot to tell you, and that I didn’t bring my birth control pills. We can go back and get them,
she stated.
Lacey started to rise. Travis said, Don’t you dare move an inch! I have wanted my baby girl named Denali for five years. Now I am going to give her to you.
That night was one they would always remember, and neither wanted it to end. They had slept none and when the time for check-out came, neither wanted to leave.
One more night ought to do it. You do agree that we need to make sure?
Travis asked kissing Lacey’s neck and easing back into heaven.
OH yes! I agree with my little WOODPECKER that we must do it until we are certain. Now call the desk,
she wiggled.
Wiggle one more time and I won’t be able to talk,
he stated. The word ‘little and woodpecker" made it grow from the memories he was envisioning of their first encounter years ago on her front porch.
She wiggled and he was making her gasp because she was remembering that same encounter, and how that woodpecker had grated on her nerves ever since.
I called while you were in the shower,
he said in spurts before they climaxed.
CHAPTER TWO
T he investigation was being lead by Sergeant Eugene Landis. The evidence was mounting and the arrest would soon follow. Artemis had observed his father-in-law working this case and it had inspired him to want to go to the academy.
This was the day he was going to tell the Sarge.
I need to talk to you about how is the proper way to apply for the police academy. I want to be just like you!
Artemis swallowed hard and looked Sgt. Landis straight in the eyes.
Sarge was moved, and he too swallowed hard. He loved this kid. He had three girls, and this boy had no father. He had taken him under his wing when his daughter married him. He was never emotional about anything until … today.
He patted Artemis on the back and said, That is the best compliment that I have ever received.
The Sarge had received many accolades in his police career, but this coming from Artemis was extra special.
Have you talked to my little girl about this?
Sgt. Landis asked. His daughter Meghan was now twenty three and not a little girl anymore. To the Sarge, she would always be his little Meggie.
Artemis was her husband and had proven to be a good one. He had proved himself to be a hard working young man, and was well thought of at the Lowe’s Improvement Store where he had worked full-time for the last five years.
We have, Sir. I have set money aside for my education and Meg supports my decision,
Artemis stated as a matter of fact.
The Sarge said, "Then we will
