    SYDNEY

Sunny California treated me fabulous or at least it tried. It’s been a month since I broke up with Sebastian. I won’t pretend this break up has been easy; it hasn’t. Breaking up with Jonathan was just long overdue. We didn’t want the same things out of life. Miami holds a special place in my heart. That night in Sebastian’s condo he explained how lost he was without me. I have to believe the look in Sebastian’s eyes was sincerity when he revealed he couldn’t be without me.

I received purple orchids today at my L.A. office and at Samantha’s home. There wasn’t a card attached but I knew they were from Sebastian. After one week of being apart the calls and messages stopped. Two weeks ago, I started receiving a single text on Monday morning.

    It read:

    Have a good week beautiful.

Deleting his phone number did what? Nothing. I still knew it was him because I memorized his number. I probably should have just blocked his phone number but I couldn’t. I missed him desperately. My body carried tattooed imprints from his hands and lips. I missed those green eyes staring at me when I awoke in the morning. The way he kissed my lips ferociously. My body ached, the desire to be in his presence was wearing on me.

From the outside looking in, I appeared to have recovered from my break up. I enjoyed babysitting for Jacob and Samantha. I understand they have a nanny, but I wanted to take care of my little cousins. It was mesmerizing to watch Samantha get ready for a special event. She carried herself with such grace. Rather she wants to admit it or not, she’s built for the Hollywood life.

I was sitting in my beautiful Los Angeles office when I received another text from Sebastian.

    It read:

Can I meet you somewhere? Just to talk.

All of a sudden, I couldn’t breathe. Being without Sebastian revealed my deep love for him. I kept up a good front. I smiled brightly when someone told a joke, went to lunch with coworkers, and participated in family activities. If I saw a couple on the street kissing and holding hands a little piece of me died inside. I miss lying in his arms. I miss the way he gazed into my eyes like I was the only woman on earth. The way he opened his home to me and the way he hungered for me was truly missed.

Not sure why I didn’t just text him back and let him know I would meet him. However, I went on about my day. Later that night I laid in bed watching TV. My phone vibrated.

I glanced down at my phone. One new text message.

Sydney, I miss you. I can understand if you don’t want anything else to do with me. I want you to know I see you. When you go out with your coworkers you laugh but that’s not your real laugh, at least not how I remember it.

I am deeply and madly in love with you. That will not ever change. I know you have your reservations.

We can meet in a public place of your choice. Just tell me where and I will meet you there.

    I didn’t hesitate this time I responded.

    Sydney:

Ok, I will meet you at Chapps tomorrow at noon.

Sebastian stop watching me its creepy.

    Sebastian:

Baby, it’s not creepy. I love my woman and I will always watch out for you. I meant that. Goodnight, Sweetheart.

Sebastian calling me Sweetheart pushed me over the edge. I missed that. I threw the blanket back, ran into the bathroom, and vomited again.

I sat in my favorite place on the floor next to the toilet.

I don’t understand why I keep throwing up. The pregnancy test was negative. I stared at it forever that day because a part of me didn’t believe it was true.

I think all of the anxiety has just made me sick to my stomach. I’m tired of Samantha offering up her baby doctor to check me out. I told her no. I’m not pregnant. I told her the pregnancy test confirmed that. She said I may need a blood test. I told her that was bull shit. Ah fuck, here she comes again. Maybe I should go back to Atlanta. Samantha is worse than my mama.

Hey, Sydney. I brought you a bowl of peach cobbler but I didn’t realize you were sick again.

Samantha just sit it on the table. Let me brush my teeth and I’ll be out.

    Ok.

When I exited the bathroom, Samantha was sitting at the table with her personal bowl of peach cobbler waiting for me.

You don’t give up, do you?

    No Syd, I don’t.

I sat down and began eating my food in silence.

    This is really good, Sam!

Do you think he would be mad if you told him you were pregnant?

No. I think he would be happy but concerned about my parents disowning me.

Sydney, you want children with a man who loves you. If he loves you it shouldn’t matter what the color of his skin is.

I hear you. Sometimes I wonder how can I be in love with a man I hardly know?

Syd, sometimes that is just how it goes. You have to work harder at getting to know each other. Just a little more patience is required, she smiled. Don’t do one of my numbers; leave the country then consider never coming back with the man’s baby. That never goes over well when they find out.

I smirked. I’ll keep that in mind.

I ENTERED THE CROWDED restaurant scanning the room for Sebastian. I didn’t see him anywhere.

I approached a waitress at the hostess stand.

Excuse me I’m meeting Sebastian Johansen for lunch. My name is Sydney Chambers.

She glanced down at the paper on the counter. Your party is here. Right this way.

I thought it was weird that I didn’t see him from the door. I followed her to a large booth in the back corner. The reason I didn’t see him is because he sat with his back to me.

I’ll be back to take your order, the waitress stated.

    Thank you.

I stood there for a moment gawking at Sebastian’s appearance in disbelief.

    You look barbaric!

Well nice to see you too, Sydney.

I scooted over next to him in the booth.

Sebastian, wore a green T-shirt, dark jeans, and white sneakers.

His black hair was shoulder length, curly and bushy. His full beard reached down to his chest. His shoulders were bulkier. His sea green eyes were the only thing familiar to me.

Placing my hands upon his face my eyes studied his features trying to recall the man I loved.

Sebastian, you have to take better care of yourself. You look disheveled.

I really don’t care, Sydney, he said pulling my hand to his mouth kissing it.

The waitress returned. Sebastian held my hand in his lap.

Are you ready to order? the waitress asked.

Two glasses of water and a coke please, Sebastian stated.

    Coming right up.

I pulled my hand away from Sebastian’s grip moving over to the other side of the table. Deep down I hated to leave his side. I wanted him to hold me and never let go.

Thank you for ordering my favorite drink, I smiled.

    You’re welcome.

We glanced over the menu then placed our orders when the waitress returned.

Sebastian, there is so much I want to say.

    I’m listening.

I’m not sure how we can come back from the ordeal that occurred in Orlando.

Can we please at least try?

I leaned toward him. Are you seriously telling me you will never ask me again who I work for?

Sebastian ran his hand over his hair and smirked. What would you like my answer to be? he asked with smoldering eyes.

I sipped my coke. I would like for you to let it go. I understand you revealed who you work for to me but I wouldn’t use it against you.

So, you would give us another try.

Sebastian, right now we are just talking.

The waitress returned. Alright, a shrimp pasta for you sir and a cheese burger and fries miss. Enjoy.

Thank you, Sebastian and I replied.

I took a huge bite of my burger while Sebastian picked over his food.

    I finished chewing my food.

Sebastian how did you find me?

Sydney, you know how I found you, he said taking a sip of his water.

Is that why they hired you? Do you normally take dangerous jobs?

He straightened his spine against the booth and laughed.

You’re worried about me? he asked raising his bushy eyebrows. He stretched his arms out along the top of the booth.

    I didn’t answer.

To answer your question. I normally do all the important computer work. Sydney, Miami was a dangerous job for me. Wait, not for me for him. His lips curled up.

Yeah, I know what you’re asking, he stated taking my hand pulling me back over to him.

He pressed his lips against the side of my head. Baby, I missed you so much. His voice wavered.

I missed him too. Even though I felt he was being sincere. I just couldn’t bring myself to say it.

His aftershave crept into my nostrils reminding me how I love his scent. I crossed my legs hoping that would be enough to calm my lower lips.

Sebastian gazed into my eyes then pursed his lips against mine with hunger. Baby, I missed these lips, he murmured capturing my lips again with intense need as he caressed my back.

I didn’t want him to stop but I pulled back. Sebastian, we are supposed to just talk.

I know. I’m sorry. I needed to taste those lips, he whispered.

He sat back taking another sip of water. After he sat his glass down, I grabbed it taking a swig too.

I see someone still loves me, he smiled.

I ignored his statement. Again, Sebastian how did you find me?

I admit it was hard. You basically fell off the face of the earth. So, I used a few toys to find you. I flew my drone by your apartment window. I called your office. Your secretary said you were out. I pondered a bit then remembered your cousin owned the property in the mountains and maybe you would come here. I set up mini cams outside of your cousin’s neighborhood with the help of my laptop, then I found you.

I sat there staring at him in disbelief. Then you sent the orchids to let me know you found me. Do you know what those flowers went through to get to me? Jacob, is a celebrity. You can’t just send stuff to his house.

Somehow you received them and I will keep sending them. Baby, I’m not going home without you!

Sebastian, you have to stop watching me. And you do have to go home without me.

Not without my woman. I don’t want to do this but I will. He exhaled. Listen we can work out our relationship on your terms. If that means no sex and going out on dates then that is what we will do.

I glared at him for a long time. I’ll think about it.

He pulled me close again. I buried my face in the crease of his neck.

I miss the taste of your pussy. I miss the way you tremble when you’re cumming in my mouth, he whispered.

I clenched the front of his T-shirt then moaned against his neck.

I-I have to leave, I whispered pushing away from him scooting out of the booth.

I was ready to go back to his hotel and fuck the shit out of him until I was sated, but I had to get out of there. I need to see if I can trust him again.

Sebastian threw a hundred dollar bill on the table then followed behind me as I sashayed in my purple strappy summer office dress and black heels out of the restaurant.

Sebastian gazed into my eyes while we stood on the corner in front of the restaurant.

The sun beat down on us.

Sebastian are you staying in a hotel or on the street?

I’m staying at the Four Seasons hotel not on the street, he huffed.

Sydney, how much longer are you going to be in L.A.? I’ve been staying in the hotel for almost a month I’m sure it’s cheaper to rent a condo. Just because I have money doesn’t mean I like burning through it.

Sebastian, I do not know. I told you to go back home.

Sebastian snaked his arm around my waist. Not until you’re on my jet with me. I will let you go for now. I know how you feel about public affection. I’ll call you later.

I stood on my tippy toes kissing him on the cheek.

I glanced out the corner of my eye remembering my cousin was still parked across the street. She snapped a picture of us. Samantha made u turn and dropped the top on the Lamborghini.

Shit! Here comes my stalker cousin. I didn’t want her to see us like this.

See us like what? Like a couple?

I didn’t answer. Seems to be my theme today; not answering Sebastian’s questions.

Sebastian, you brought us back up again?

Yes. I did. Because there is an us. We’re working through our relationship issues.

I rolled my eyes then cut them in Samantha’s direction.

Mr. Johansen! Samantha smiled extending her hand.

Yes, and you are? he asked while shaking her hand.

Oh, you know who I am Hacker Guy! But ok I’ll play, Samantha Latters.

He smiled as he opened the passenger door for me.

Do you have a place to stay? If not, you can stay with us, Samantha smiled beneath her Gucci sunglasses.

Sebastian quickly glanced down at me. No, thank you. I’m staying at the Four Seasons.

Nice. We should get together; go on a double date.

That would be nice, he smiled.

Nice to meet you Mrs. Latters.

Sebastian, I’ll talk to you later.

See you later sweetheart, he said backing up onto the curb.

I turned starring daggers into Samantha. Why do you have to be so dramatic?

Samantha burned rubber as she darted away from the curb.

What did I do? I didn’t come into the restaurant like a respectable resident of L.A. I will say one thing, he’s had it rough.

He should have had it rough. He lied to me and used me as a pawn! I spat.

Sydney, to be fair, he took an oath when he became an officer of the law. And he broke that oath when he told you he worked for the CIA. He could have said he was an FBI agent but why admit to his girlfriend he works for the CIA? Oh, because he loves you! Has anyone called you asking questions about where you were that night after that ordeal?

    No.

Right, because he stuck to the plan. I’m not saying he was completely right in using you as a pawn but come on Sydney you know the business. I know you played your part to protect him but did you really explain that to him?

    No, I whispered.

Well, maybe you should. Listen, I’m not saying it won’t be a hard road but now you have something in common; you both up hold the law, she smiled.

Samantha this is not my job. I told you I wasn’t doing this anymore.

Samantha smiled. You always say that.

Listen cousin, be a little nicer to the man. I think he genuinely loves you. How long has he been out here?

    I was embarrassed to say.

    Almost a month, I mumbled.

    What?

    About a month! I shouted.

Girl, that man is gaga over you. You playing games. Just tell him you don’t want to be with him and let him be on his way. That is if you truly don’t. But you know I know the truth. You love that man dirty underwear and all. You would have to; kissing him while he looked like homeless guy.

I have to admit Samantha had some great points. Maybe I was just scared and didn’t know how to handle the situation.

What do I do about Jonathan?

What do you want to do about the man who doesn’t want to marry you and or have kids?

He said he misses me and thinks he might be ready.

Girl, who the fuck hanging on to might. The way Sebastian looks at you. He wouldn’t waste any time putting a ring on your finger. Didn’t you say the only reason he didn’t want to get you pregnant was because of Auntie?

    Yeah.

Girl, fuck Jonathan! I’m on team, Sebastian!

I smiled at my crazy cousin waving her hand through the air.

    Team Sebastian! she yelled.

I chuckled. I hear you Sam! Hey, remember when we didn’t have shit and dreamed of riding in a car like this?

Yeah, I remember. It’s all the same from the West End to Decatur. You dreamed of something better. I was so proud of you when you became an Attorney. Smart little Bitch!

    We both laughed hysterically.

Samantha, you are no slouch either. You are doing it big. Girl has her own business. You a Boss!

She puffed her chest out. Yes, I am!

    I love
