    Chapter 1

Thank, you Miami! I screamed into the microphone; the audience cheered louder making me smile slightly. I loved performing, although I still missed having a normal life, like any other famous teenager.

I let out a sigh, turning away from the crowd giving the band a small cue for an encore. Yeah, I most definitely missed not getting to live my life like I used to. I missed being able to walk down the street without worrying about paparazzi, or even stepping outside my hotel room without being surrounded by random fans.

It was a hassle being famous; you hardly get to life your life, it was always about just work, work, work. I shook my head, as the audience began chanting my name. I’d love to do an encore for you guys, but it’s late. I laughed into the microphone.

The cheered louder and I gave in. I can never say no to my fans; they were my weakness. Alright guys! This one is a song I’ve been working on its called Double Crosser! I grinned.

The band started playing the upbeat tune and the crowd started jumping up and down. The words flowed out of my mouth, as I danced around on stage. I loved this song. I wrote it a little while before the concert so it wasn’t complete. I just made random words and went with it, but the crowd seemed to like it so it doesn’t matter now.

    *****

I let out a long breath and sat down in my trailer, taking off my microphone and stared at my reflection. The happy girl that was on stage earlier was not gone and replaced with just… Me. Just plain old, Madison Watson. There was nothing special about this girl, she was just average.

I shook my head and pulled the fake highlights out of my hair, before grabbing a cloth to work on getting the gunky makeup off my face. I knew that this was ‘living the dream’ as my manger called it, but what was the price for fame. No one really asks themselves what they’re willing to lose to reach this level in the industry. I found myself asking myself that every day now.

I’d never expected becoming famous to be so hard. When I looked at my idols I thought this would be a piece of cake. I knew it would have required work, of course, but never on the amount of pressure that fell onto my shoulders. Now I understood why idols acted the way they did. From the drug and alcohol scandals to the dating rumors, I could see why they acted so badly. The pressure was overwhelming and they all reacted to it in a different way.

I sucked in a deep breath and picked up my phone from my dresser, scrolling through my messages sadly. I knew that I wouldn’t have a message from him, but it was out of habit to check my phone. I groaned and placed my phone down, before continuing to remove all the make-up my artists had done for me tonight. It looked wonderful, with the golden eye shadow making my chocolate eyes pop and the way they curled my hair and extensions framed my face to the T, but over-exaggerated make-up was just not me, I preferred the natural look with maybe a cat eye once in a while, but that’s all.

A knock came from my dressing room door and I looked at my reflection, before putting a fake cheery smile on my lips and calling for the person to come in. There was a quiet click and I turned to face my parents beaming faces as usual. I rushed over and greeted them, before directing them to the couch right next to my makeup stand. They gladly took a seat and my mother began to drone on and on about how amazing my performance was.

My father gave my hand a little squeeze of encouragement as I took a seat in my makeup chair, like I had before they came in. …you were just wonderful darling and that new song was wonderful…. My mother continued.

Mom, I interrupted after a few more seconds of her blabbering.

    Yes darling? She smiled.

Can we stop talking about my career and just talk about other things… How’s everyone at home? How’s my little godson? Is he getting spoiled rotten still? How are Martin, Freddie and Jude? How’s Maxine? Still getting into trouble? Is she still dancing? How’s Mel? Oh how I’ve missed her these past few months…

One question at a time Madison, my father laughed, we can’t keep up like we used to dear.

I blushed deep red, before gesturing for them to answer my questions. I knew I was asking them so much, but I couldn’t help it; I just missed my friends and family so much. It had been months since I last saw them with all the work I’d been doing. I’d never thought getting into this career could have changed my life this much.

Everyone’s fine; Mel misses you and the boys are just dying to have you visit at the family reunion next month. Noah is coming too; he finally got his green card and can’t wait to come with Maxine and his parents. Maxine has become such a wonderful dancer; she gets better every time we see her, My father smiled.

I nodded, before looking at my phone longing for it to ring. I really wanted to ask about Stephen too, but I knew I couldn’t. Only my friends knew about Stephen and I's relationship. I let out a breath and felt sadness start to settle in at the thought of not knowing if he was safe.

Stephen was my boyfriend of 3 years who’d recently been deployed once again. He would be gone for 2 months this time which made me feel a little better, but not knowing how he was doing was killing me. I reached up and twirled the necklace he’d given me to hold for him until he came back. Mom would be so upset with me if she knew about our
