Barbara-Ann has also had a couple of stories and poems published on a Canadian website. This is her first long piece of fiction for the writing world.

PREFACE
When I first started writing Zanatek, the world was in a constant state of flux – the World Trade Center Terror attacks had occurred, the environment continued to deteriorate and the rise of Al Qaeda and ISIS – was terrifying to behold.
I sought to address these and other distressing occurrences, and to come to terms with all the terrible events that continue to take place in this world of ours, by creating worlds and species of my own.
ONE
AND SO IT BEGINS
No one had ever seen anything like it. The skies were ablaze with streaming lights, and sparks emanated from what looked like comets. Everyone was amazed at such an impressive sight, but then amazement turned to horror as they realized that these comets were coming right towards them…
22313.pngThe blazing suns beat down unmercifully on the workers as they toiled the fields, hoping that this crop would survive the cruel winter. It was the year 8053. Last year’s produce had been inedible, and many of Uuffi’s people had died because they couldn’t to eat it. ‘But surely this year’s will be better?’ Uuffi thought to himself, as he toiled along with them. ‘Surely this year the Gods will be merciful!’ But how was he going to face his people if they were not? And still the sun became stronger. His parched throat ached as did his heart for his starving people. This was a planet of extreme temperatures, and it had no mercy for those who could not stand up to its capriciousness.
