Can You Change Your Fate? - Aishwarya S.N

Laughter rang in my ears as I trudge to my locker. Oh, how I hated my school! What’s up, nerdy birdie!
shouted Charlotte. More laughter continued. I have had just enough of this rubbish school. My school’s name is Redwood School. How lame can a name be?! I mean, the people who came up with that name clearly do not have a sense of imagination.
My name is…man; I don’t want to say it. Do you really want to hear it? Here it is. ROBIN. You just might be laughing by now. Robin is a boy’s name! I know! My mother had very nearly died giving birth to me, and she had seen a blood red robin flying outside. Being the ignoramus that she is, she believed that the robin would save her life, so she wished on it. Guess what?
SHE DIDN’T DIE!! My dad, the nurses, the doctor, simply everyone in the room went into hysterics (except me). My mum would live, so they gently trained after trapping it the robin and treated it like a king. Well, that robin is in our house, even today. I always feel like it looks at me, smirking each day. It has this stupid, red face, and whenever my parents aren’t in the room, it flies off its perch and pecks at me! My parents were so happy that they thought it was all because of the robin. SERIOUSLY. It was all because the Fate Guy
decided that my mum’s sins were not that bad, and decided to let her go.
The bird, my mum, my dad, nobody suffered! All except…me. That rubbish name of mine has just made me a laughing stock of my school. Looks like I’ll have to do a shift spell…for the 10th time.
img005.psdOh right, I didn’t tell you. I am not my mum’s actual daughter. You see, my parents are actually the Birth Fairies. These fairies used to sprinkle gifts and blessings onto hundreds of newborn babies each day, giving immense pleasure to all the parents. Until… the Ghastly Ghost Goblin arrived in Magiciala.
img005.psdHe bewitched all the fairies and made them evil! Now my real parents swap babies with evil baby witches and wizards. Now all the parents get pure torture. I am the only one not evil, because my mum had eaten a Lusticirsto herb before giving birth to me, a special herb that only grows in Fairyland. This herb makes sure your baby never learns evil. It surely worked!
img005.psdTherefore, until now, I’ve been living my life, having changed from 10 different schools. Each day my nose will be buried in an Atlas of my town, to find a school I haven’t yet gone to. I’m called, ‘The Nerdy Birdie,’ because my nose is always in a boring book and my name is also a bird, and it’s not even original! The Nerdy Birdie was the name of an app designed by MagicPlay for students to study better at Redwood School, Paramount High, Greendale Academy and…Coral Coast Charter? That’s it! That’s going to be the next school I will go to!!
img005.psdCoral Coast Charter. Hmm. Pretty unique, nice name and my first Charter School. No, my first Charter ‘Academy!’ This is going to be so great…wait, what if the girls there are also mean? Not to worry! I have a cauldron, which I use to make spells. I usually make my shift spells using it. I normally keep a bunch of spells I might need throughout the day, like a study spell, just in case I forgot about a test. Or a shut up spell. This spell is used whenever I find someone terribly annoying and just need him or her to keep quiet.
I have color - coordinated bottles, which I store in my brown satchel. Each bottle helps me throughout the day. Anyway, I will be going to start my shift spell, so stand back!
I start the spell, mumbling the ingredients as I add them into the cauldron. A feather of a laughing pigeon, 5 strands of a weeping fox’s fur…and an angry pink deer antler. Mix for 30 seconds and wait until a blue smoke escapes from the cauldron. Then transfer to a potion bottle,
I read. I shut my spell book as I stirred the mixture with my magic broom.
I waited. Suddenly, thunder struck. A piece of lightning ran into my room and into my cauldron. Oh no. No, no, no! A witch rule was to never add lightning or thunder into a potion that didn’t require it, as it could cause severe problems, or just change your potion. Then the cauldron illuminated, and the whole room was covered in light.
I covered my own eyes, wishing this spectacle would soon end. Like a wish granted by a genie, the light dimmed, and soon, the cauldron started bubbling. A minute later it stopped bubbling, and a purple smoke escaped! I realized my mistake. I snapped into action like a cheetah on the chase. I grabbed a bottle and poured all the liquid in.
I cleaned my cauldron with a cleanup spell.
I then opened my spell book. I thumbed through every page, hoping to find the picture of the spell I had in my hands. I finally rounded all the spells, which had a purple potion to four different spells: a flying spell, a jumping spell, a dancing spell and a running spell. This is what the appearance of each potion was described like in my book:
Flying spell: The color of sweet violets.
Jumping spell: The color of a mauve ring.
Dancing spell: The color of a purple amethyst.
Running spell: The color of a purple grape.
My spell looked vaguely similar to the color of violets, a flying spell. Before trying it myself, I remember Rule No. 35 in the Witches’ Rulebook: Always test a potion on something non-living to make sure that you don’t get into trouble and that your potion works. I grabbed Valeria, my favorite Victorian doll. Oh Val, I don’t wanna do this, but I have to. All my other dolls have been tested already with potions. I’m sorry,
I say, and for one split second, I felt like I saw her winking at me and saying, It’s OK, Robin.
I placed her on the testing table; her hands and legs stretched out like a starfish. I slowly put a drop of potion onto her. A purple mist covered her, and when it cleared, I saw Valeria talking! So it wasn’t a flying spell. It was a life-giving spell!
Val…you’re talking!
I said, jumping up and down in delight. You see, long ago, when I was born to my foster parents, I found my spell book in my room, but it had one spell torn out of it, although the spell’s name was written on the top: A Life Giving Spell. Oh Rob, I’m so glad I can talk! Now we can have fun every day, really!
she said, in the voice of a nightingale.
But Val, what if my foster parents see you like this? They’ll think I’m evil or something and kick me out of here!
I exclaimed, shuddering. Don’t worry Rob! Did you realize the fact that this spell makes sure that whoever has gotten a life can only talk with their master or mistress? I can only talk to your parents if you say so!
says Valeria. Great!
I exclaim. Suddenly I hear footsteps.
You aren’t talking to my parents,
I say. Immediately Valeria floats to her original spot, in the pearl white cupboard, lifeless. My parents knock on the door. Hey Robin, we’d like to have a small talk with you,
says my dad. Come in,
I say. I find myself face to face with my parents, who look like they’ve been hit by thunder and want to kill the thunder.
"We’ve heard from this sweet girl called Charlotte that
