Dörnberg: in the Shadow of the Josefsberg: The Families of Somogydöröcske Somogy County Hungary 1730-1948

In the past, the steep, majestic, heavily forested, and somewhat impregnable Josefsberg was the lair of robber bands and brigands following the expulsion of the Turks from the area and all of Hungary. In the future, it would become known as the Jószefhegy. It is one of the highest elevations in northeastern Somogy County. In its lengthening shadow, the village of Dörnberg would emerge in the early decades of the eighteenth century named as such by its German settlers in reference to the abundance of thorns in its lower regions.

These first settlers were in large part of Hessian origin, having joined the Schwabenzug (the Great Swabian migration) of the eighteenth century into Hungary at the invitation of the Habsburg emperor Charles VI. The fact that they were Lutherans would lead to decades in which they were forced to exist as an underground congregation until the Edict of Toleration was promulgated by the emperor Joseph II in 1782, which led to the naming of the local heights as the Josefsberg in his honor. It was sometime later that the county administration renamed the village, and it became Somogydöröcske.

The village would maintain its German character throughout its history until the end of the Second World War when Protocol XIII of the Potsdam Declaration was carried out on April 6, 1948, and the vast majority of the village population was expelled along with the German families in its affiliates in Bonnya and Gadács and sent by cattle car to the then Russian zone of occupation of Germany. Those from Szil followed a week later.

This publication is addressed to the English-speaking descendants of those families that immigrated to Canada, Australia, and the United States prior to the Second World War, as well as the families who were successful in escaping from the Russian zone of Germany to the west and were able to find a new home in English-speaking countries. It provides them with genealogical information about their forebears and additional information regarding their life and history.

Henry A. Fischer is the author of several genealogical and historical studies of the descendants of German families that migrated into the Kingdom of Hungary during the early 18th Century. Born in Kitchener, Ontario in Canada, he is a graduate of the University of Western Ontario and Waterloo Lutheran Seminary. Following over forty years in the pastorate he began research on his own family history that led to his career as an author. He is married to his wife Jean, the father of Stephen and David and the grandfather of Julianna, John, Evan and Luke the next generation of the Children of the Danube now transplanted to Canada.

When the origin of any information was from another source it is cited with a code. The code consists of two letters that are in brackets. Georg Ledig settled in the new community established north of Ecsény which became known as Serekszöllös. It became an affiliate congregation of the Lutheran church in Tab sometime after he first arrived. He and his family were included among those who were expelled there in March of 1948. They were deported to Saxony in the Russian Zone of Germany and were resettled in Wülknitz bei Dresden. He and his wife later left illegally and found sanctuary in Bissingen-an-Ennz in the American Zone. But his two sons remained in the Russian Zone.

In 1911 along with several other families from Somogydöröcske Johann Ledig purchased a parcel of land from Hungarian land speculators and took up residence in the newly formed community of Szöllös. He was included in the expulsion which took place in March of 1948 along with his son Georg and his family and they were assigned to live in Wülknitz, Saxony on their arrival in the Russian Zone of occupation of Germany.

Johann Ledig and his family were among those families that were expelled from Szöllös in March of 1948. On their arrival in the Russian Zone of Germany they were assigned to live in the State of Saxony but the family left shortly afterwards illegally and were successful in reaching the American Zone of occupation and resided in Ludwigsburg-Ossweil where Johann died shortly afterwards.

Valentin Ledig and his family were included in the expulsion of the major portion of the German population of Szöllös that numbered about 200 persons in March of 1948. They were processed at Pirna, on the border between the Russian Zone of Germany and the Czech Republic and assigned to live in Leutewitz in the State of Saxony where the family would reside in the future.

They returned to Hungary and he later emigrated to the United States again arriving in New York on April 14, 1914 onboard the Saxonia sailing from the port of Fiume. Andreas Lehr and his family lived in Bonnyapuszta and were included in the expulsion that took place in April of 1948. They were deported to the Russian Zone of Germany and were resettled in Saxony. Andreas Lehr was conscripted into the German Waffen SS in the autumn of 1944 on the basis of the accord signed by Admiral Horthy on the part of the Hungarian government in collusion with the Volksbund. He was reported missing in action at the end of the war.

Heinrich Lehr was a casualty of the First World War and his son Heinrich was taken to forced labour in the Soviet Union in January of 1945 to the camp complex known as Stalino in the Donets Basin of Ukraine. He was able to survive the privations there and was sent back to Hungary when the camps were being shut down in 1948.

Jakob Lehr first emigrated to the United States in 1907. He sailed onboard the Samland from the port of Antwerp, Belgium and arrived in New York on April 2nd. He proceeded to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and his contact there was Sebastian Knoch. He returned home to Hungary but set out for the United States again in 1913 accompanied by his sixteen year old daughter Katharina and arrived in New York on May 4th sailing onboard the Carpathia out of the port of Fiume. They proceeded from there to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to his brother-in-law Johann Ferber.

Johann Lehr and his family lived in Bonnyapuszta and they were included in the expulsion that took place in April of 1948 and were deported to the Russian Zone of Germany. At Pirna they were designated for settlement in Saxony. Shortly after they managed to escape to the American Zone of Germany and resided in the Bietigheim-Bissingen region of Württemberg.

Theis son Johann died in the battle for Berlin in the spring of 1945.
