About this ebook

The Story of an American Family: The Lunt Family from 1633 to the Present weaves together diverse strands drawn from family memorabilia, libraries’ dusty volumes, and modern digitized archives to present the biography of a family. Rooted in England, the members of this family planted itself in the soil of New England and grew to influence American life in diverse ways—politically, economically, spiritually, and educationally.
The author, Lynda Zwinger, a seasoned researcher of genealogies, author of books and articles, journal editor, and English professor, has brought to the long sweep of this history an eye for the telling details and a gift for working them into a story that both entertains and educates.
The illustrations and ancillary material in The Story of an American Family supplement the narrative and help readers to envision the members of this noteworthy family in the context of their times and locales.

    Introduction

The methodology of this book is eclectic. I have deployed a number of research tools including online archival, traditional library (brick and mortar), family lore, and visual culture research. In addition, I have been able to examine a significant cache of family memorabilia—photographs, letters, two family Bibles, handmade family tree genealogies of various vintages, postcards, cartes de visite, scrapbooks, published books, and diaries. This is not, however, a genealogy, though it has benefited greatly from the work of many genealogists. Nor is it a history; this book is greatly indebted to historians as well. Rather, this book is a biography of an American family line. At times impressionistic and even slightly speculative, it limns the qualities of succeeding generations of the Lunt family, a family with roots as old as the country’s and which has made significant contributions to that country’s growth and success. The Lunts have been active in establishing, protecting, and nurturing America politically, economically, spiritually, and educationally. It has been a great pleasure to trace this story of a remarkable family through so many important periods of United States history.

While assembling the research and writing by Lynda and Tenney on the Lunt genealogical biography, we appreciated the value of telling this story now. We wanted to place it in the hands of present and future generations. While the young may have little interest in preceding generations, age often brings an inquiring mind. Don’t wait until too late to probe this fleeting source of family history before it is buried and not to be retrieved. Ask, query and remember for those who follow. We hope this book serves as a stimulating bridge between generations. It represents a leap from carefully hand-written records to vast internet data. Finally, let it become a location to record your own family’s place in Lunt history.

    The Charm of Research

To weave together the fading dates of old manuscripts with the traditions that have survived sleeping generations, until the joy and the tears, the quaint speech and early piety, stand out upon the tapestry in the semblance of living man - This gives a pleasure which he only who has stood at the loom can feel and understand.
